what will that do to the local eco system of the desert though and the movement of animals and humans across that space?

Since when do the Saudis care about minutiae like wildlife and the environment?

They don't even care about their own citizens' wellfare.

A couple of quotes I found about this project:

"Although marketing images make Neom look like an empty desert, it is in fact home to local tribes who have been forcibly relocated for the project, according to the Wall Street Journal."

"According to the Saudis, artificial intelligence will be central to how people live in the 500-metre-high, 200-metre-wide structure, a car-free, carbon neutral bubble"

Maybe this isn't so far from what is planned for us all. Replacement of traditional cultures in harmony with nature by the technocratic Brave New World.
