Everything to do with masks / face coverings

It occurred to me this morning that face masks were the current equivalent of ww2 gasmasks. With citizens forced to carry them as a physical reminder to be ever vigilant to a threat to the lungs from poison gas effects. Which never happened.

This from the Spectator, sound familiar??

'Among those in London who refused to carry a mask was George Orwell. ‘The issue of them is simply a symbol of national solidarity, the first step towards wearing a uniform,’ he wrote in his diary in June 1940. ‘As soon as war started the carrying or not carrying of a gas mask assumed social and political implications.’

In Orwell's opinion about 20 per cent of Londoners still carried their gas masks. These he described as ‘ultra-cautious types, the suburban rate-payer type,’ and they were looked down on by the 80 per cent who didn't carry a mask. But the cautious types gave as good as they got. ‘If, and when, a gas attack comes, those idiots who have not deigned to carry the mask, which has been given to them free of charge, will die,’ wrote a correspondent to the Gloucester Echo. ‘They will have no one but themselves to blame.’ Another wrote to the Yorkshire Post suggesting two shillings as a suitable fine for those caught without a mask.

But despite pressure in some quarters, including demands in Parliament, Churchill's government resisted calls to introduce fines. This infuriated some. The Mayor of Rochdale, Herbert Clarke, told his local paper on 7 September 1940: ‘If we ever get any gas casualties in this country it will be a blot on the democratic system which issues requests and not orders in a matter of life and death.’

On that same day the 'Blitz' started. Around 350 German bombers raided London, inflicting terrible damage on the Docks and the East End. But there was no gas attack, and nor would there be throughout the bombing campaign which, awful as it was, didn't result in anywhere near the number of casualties forecast by the government.'

Very interesting. And those gas masks will have been as useful a defence against bombs as the current ones are against COVID.

Hi TFH xx

As the filters were asbestos they were also potentially lethal.

This an extract from Juliet Gardiner 'wartime Britain 1939-1945'

"People were encouraged to wear gas-masks for 15 minutes a day to get used to the experience. The government threatened to punish people for not carrying gas masks. However, legislation was never passed to make it illegal. The government published posters that said: "Hitler will send no warning - so always carry your gas mask". Government advertisements appeared in newspapers pleading with people to carry their gas masks with them at all times. Teachers were instructed to send children back home to fetch their masks if they had forgotten them. Entry was occasionally refused to restaurants, or places of entertainment, to patrons who were without their survival kit. John Lewis, the department store, reminded staff that "those who come without their gas mask must not be surprised if they are dismissed as unsuitable in time of war".

Face coverings, social distancing, and social isolation have absolutely nothing to do with controlling any virus (there is no virus), but about controlling us. Face coverings, social distancing, and social isolation have been used for generations to manipulate and control people – especially those who challenge the official narrative. Religions and prisons are two examples.

It's all programming to control the masses in my opinion.

Thanks. It's so important to look to the past. I guess that's why they try to rewrite it. My dad always says they rely on people having short memories. We see so many similarities. It's the psychology that fascinates me.

I went into a family owned kiosk and the young lady still has her mask on. It's so ugly and repulsive that I find it hard to communicate with her the way I used to.

I asked her at the start and she said it was uncomfortable to wear, but when I asked again 2 weeks later she said "I'm used to it now, I don't notice it"

If I could be bothered to ask again I think she would say that she sees so many people that she feels safer.

I made the effort to politely / gently ask a young man in the pet superstore why he was wearing a mask, was it for himself, was it his choice. He said he felt more protected. I said be a bit careful because the masks are plastic and have a lot of chemicals and fibres that you're breathing in, so you have to have the right balance; you're young and healthy, I hope you don't mind me saying. He said thank you for your concern. I didn't say it's not doing anything, I just wanted to let him know that it's not without harm. I'm glad we shared a few words and it wasn't awkward at all.

I'm still regularly travelling by bus, and two things I'm pleased to see is that more people are using buses again, while those still wearing masks are becoming fewer.

It still amuses me though when someone gets on wearing a face mask, and then won't dare sit next to another person. They then choose to stand in the most awkward part of the bus, where people are forced to brush past them when getting on or off. 😁

Strangely, most of the mask wearers are those who will hurriedly put on their covering just before the doors open to let them on. And I've even seen people get on, sit down, and only then pull out a face mask and put it on! 😷

I think its quite sad the way people have become mentally conditioned like this.

As we know everyone is exempt, but it's a pity that people are made to feel awkward and uncomfortable as some would do anything to avoid potential confrontation. I believe it's a matter of principle. The type of 'effort' required relates to many other areas of life too?

Vice President of Confederation of British Surgery

No masks, social distancing, or travel restrictions for politicians and the british royal family at the g7 summit in cornwall, the royal ascot, or the 2020 uefa european football championship. This is not a real pandemic.

You must be mistaken; the Queen was very vulnerable and also in mourning for dear Prince Phillip 😆

Yes, also there was Wimbledon 28th June to 11th July 2021. Before our restrictions were removed. Before indoor bars?

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Scholfield were there on July 5th, arriving in masks briefly, sitting together in the packed crowds, before returning to sitting apart on the sofa in the morning. She mentioned that it was outside. Remember asking what if the roof is closed? There's one site with many photos ...

There was a man in the veg section at Lidl yesterday walking around blasting off big sneezes everywhere (must have been about 5 times) and it's in my nature to be disgusted at this which I kind of was but I mainly found it amusing because of masked people scurrying. I must have been caught in his line of fire but I've not even got a sniffle. I did not buy any veg though! 😂

Talk Radio - Ian Collins - phone in on the reintroduction of masks. Started with five minutes debate between Prof David Livermore and Dr Bharat Pankhania. I must say the comments are much more balanced than they used to be?

I'll post some of the commentary later ...
