Insulation was supposed to save us money - but it ruined our homes: Millions face crippling repair costs after green upgrades were botched

  • Cheap-to-fit spray foam cavity wall insulation can cause damp and mould
  • The insulation material can transfer the water across the cavity to the interior
  • One expert has estimated that up to two million homes may have problems
  • Fears the rush to insulate Britain will cause massive damage to properties

It's quite laughable really. There's probably a very good reason why houses and walls were built with cavity walls, something to do with providing adequate ventilation, in order to prevent issues such as damp and mould.

So it stands to reason that if people start to fill up these cavities with insulation "in order to save money and to save the planet", then the lack of ventilation is only going to result in more problems with damp and mould.

It does make me wonder when I think about older buildings and houses, as though perhaps they were designed and built in a time when it was generally much warmer, so insulation was less of an issue.

Then again you have people living in low-rise and high-rise accomodation, who have no garden (or choose not to use any outdoor space provided) to hang and dry out washing, then keep all the windows closed "to keep in the heat" and then wonder why their flat gets riddled with mould and damp.

It also makes no sense to have your heating on full blast, and then have your windows open during the winter.

Surely this was why cavity walls came about?

If we think of many stone buildings they are usually built within the last 200 years and within that timeframe we had ice houses which were filled with chunks of ice that was often hauled out of rivers and then salmon among other things were stored in those icehouses. Also curling was a popular sport in scotland and there are many wee curling ponds dotted around often as parts of estates with big houses dating from the last 300 years so water was freezing over enough for people to be walking and sliding about on even in the last century. I think britain even had a half decent ice hockey team at one point. So things were pretty cold!

I remember winters being colder in my youth or it seemed that there was more snow about. Aviemore was built as a ski centre in the 1960's but if you go there in the winter now the lower ski lifts are all abandoned as there is not the snow cover to use them. This winter has been very mild.

But the older houses had open fires and a bit of a draft probably helped with airflow. People probably just put on more clothes during the colder months; i live in an old house with an open fire so i wear extra layers in the winter. Some houses would use the fire ash in the loft to act as insulation above the lathe and plaster ceilings.

If you go back far enough to say when the romans were here then they were apparently growing grapes as far north as Edinburgh and i heard it said that the visible terraces on the flanks of arthurs seat were being used for grape cultivation. So that's back say 2000 years, when things might have been a bit warmer

Cavity wall houses were really going up in large numbers after the second world war and the problem is if damp bridges across from the outer layer and penetrates into the inside of the house so the point of the cavity was to prevent that and wall ties are designed so that any moisture running across the wall tie hits a knot or other obstruction and then drips down so that it doesn't pass all the way across.

The other classic problem is damp around the base of the walls and people often drill in and put in chemical damp proof courses but i'm not sure how effective those are. They are probably better putting in drainage around the base of the wall, ensuring the air vents are clear and clearing any plant life away from the walls to let light and air in

Russian women dip their children into ice water and maybe that sets their natural thermostat at a low temperature to cope with the russian climate. maybe british people should start baptising themselves in cold water more to toughen up!

A massive cyberattack warning Ukrainians to "be afraid and expect the worst" has hit government websites, leaving some inaccessible on Friday morning and prompting Ukraine to open an investigation.

Ukraine's foreign ministry spokesperson told Reuters it was too early to say who could be behind the attack but said Russia had been behind similar strikes in the past.

Unfortunately, despite this "BREAKING NEWS" for several hours, BBC and Sky too busy running endless montages of Sir (!) Sidney Poitier. Or maybe they haven't worked out the fake narrative for the dead MP yet.

UK gives Ukraine anti-tank weapons as Canada sends special forces

https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2022/1/18/uk-gives-ukraine-anti-tank-weapons-as-canada-sends-special-forces

Quote

The United Kingdom has begun supplying Ukraine with anti-tank weapons and Canada has reportedly deployed a small contingent of special forces to Kyiv amid concerns of a possible invasion by Russia.

The developments came as Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov angrily rejected claims by the United States last week that Moscow was preparing a pretext to invade Ukraine if diplomacy failed to meet its objectives.

Thought it was "interesting" that the three (...) top stories on MSM yesterday were:

The texas synagogue attack by "British" man (ie anti-Joo)

New info on who shopped Anne Frank to the Nazis (ie anti-Joo)

And then Israeli (mhm) tests discover that a 4th shot/booster is necessary to combat the dreaded moronic/covid.

Hmmm.

Microsoft pay 60 million euros IN CASH for the computer game company that makes Call Of Duty and other top-selling titles.

Why are they so keen to dump that much CASH in one go?

On the surface level it's about destroying their main rival (Sony) who they've pretty much forced into making their own version of Microsoft game pass which will be unveiled very soon.

Game pass runs at a huge loss but Microsoft have the deeper pockets so they don't care as it's about monopoly.

Under the surface i think it's about their plans for having the biggest stake in the Metaverse in the future.

No description given to the "suspect" "the male" "he" they have in custody.

Now I bet if it was a native Irish man his face would be plastered all over the place by now!.

And of course, more lunatic calls from academics on Irish TV calling for men to sit a licence to be allowed to be part of society like that Sarah girl last year.

What do they know? I mean Activision Blizzard made 8 billion last year so it's quite lucrative, but there's no guarantee it will maintain that and the company is only worth 21 billion compared to its sale value of 68 billion. There must be some long term thing going on here.

Two stories in the news today - the royals visiting the FOUNDLING charity, photographed with the word "orphan" repeated behind them many times, and the story of 100,000 children going missing off the school radar in the UK since covid began. Not the first time the media have run parallel stories like this, in plain sight.
