Grumpy Owl
Neither have I! 'I haven't had my recycling taken since January' Quote A front room filled with bags of cardboard boxes, empty milk cartons and metal tins is the current reality for Frances Jones. The 72-year-old from Sparkbrook has not had her recycling collected by Birmingham City Council since January due to the ongoing bin strikes. Mrs Jones is living with her recycling because she cannot book an appointment to the tip without owning a car, something she has described as a "flawed system". The council said only residents with a booking, linked to the registration plate of their vehicle, external, were permitted to access recycling centres, with "no exceptions". The council has said residents must keep hold of their recycling "until the next opportunity" if they cannot access a tip. "At the moment [the recycling] is mainly in the front room, or in the back. It's not nice. It's just very frustrating and worrying not knowing how long it will go on," she said. Neighbours were being helpful and offered tip runs but she felt awkward about asking someone to take her rubbish away, she added. from: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5ypvejpp01o Solution: put your recycling in with the rest of the household rubbish, which is still being collected. That's exactly what I am doing, as are other households across Birmingham. I don't have access to a car so I'm unable to take my recycling to the tip either. No way am I accumulating rubbish in my own home, and no-one else needs to either.

I'm sure you're sensible enough to do that outside. Meanwhile in Birmingham... Plea to not burn recycling during bin strike Quote People in Birmingham have been urged to not burn uncollected recycling during the bin strike after a resident was rescued by firefighters. West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) said the resident, who escaped injury, was given oxygen by fire crews and treated by paramedics after trying to burn recycling inside their home. The incident came amid the suspension of routine collection services in the city during the ongoing refuse workers' strike, which began on 11 March. Emily Fernandez, head of fire prevention at WMFS, said burning household recycling, including cardboard, paper or plastics, was "very dangerous, especially indoors". from: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cjr79gndqj5o

Grumpy Owl
I would like one day to buy a home, but there's no way I'd be tempted to buy any new-build. For starters, they're all out of my price-range. Secondly... New build estates plagued with constant problems Quote When Reece Aleksander moved into a new-build housing estate in the West Midlands five years ago he thought he had bought his dream home. However, he said it had become a nightmare. A landslip before Christmas has blocked access to his and some other residents' homes ever since. But Haden Cross Drive in Cradley Heath also features street lights that have never worked and sewers that still have not been taken on by the water company. Developer Dunedin Homes said the landslip was not a "simple, quick or easy fix", but that it was working on a temporary measure. It added that much of the work on street lights had been completed and that sewers would be adopted "in due course". from: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c70ze74l6jpo In a nutshell, these big developer firms are only interested in making profit, lots of it. Many of these new-build developments are built cheaply and shoddily. They might 'look nice' when they're finished and done out inside, but do they justify the cost? If you're paying between 250k and 500k for a 'new' home, you shouldn't have to expect to deal with 'snagging' issues, and glaring problems like incomplete roads/footways or sewerage issues.
