As far as school goes my daughter starts to do GCSE's this year. She still hasn't done one essay in three years. There was an option if enough people wanted to do it to learn Italian. My daughter is Italian and speaks etc fluently. Fortunately she's in a good catchment area and she just got into one of the best public schools in the country. It's pretty affluent, and not very diverse, but I don't have to worry so much about her safety now.
