You've Been Framed! The DIF Snooker Thread

Pool talk, cuz i'm still buzzing after playing so well (unbeaten) at the pub today. I'm gonna get a new cue and play more again. Snooker is so long winded at times with all the set up, and pool is fun but there's real skill also. Here's my observations of major mistakes that the average (even long term) player makes.

1. Hitting the ball too hard. Pool balls are ping pong balls compared to snooker, they fly about all over the place, and what's more so is the white, risking in offs and bad position.

2. Rushing shots. There's a misconception that in pool you have to be fast. You can't be a tortoise, but take your time with each shot. Visualize where everything should end up if the shot goes right.

3.  Playing low percentage pots instead of safety. This is one where you really have to trust your potting, because you risk leaving your opponent in if you miss. Often the best shot looks completely insignificant. You nudge a cluster slightly open, your opponent can hit a ball but hasn't got a shot. Meanwhile 3 or 4 shots later you've got a chance on the ball you just nudged out.

4. Too distracted. Focus on the game.

5. Too drunk. You're not Alex Higgins; hands down the best drunk cue sportsman ever to play. With the worst cue action ever. The guy was a genius.

To correctly screw, one should hold the butt very lightly.

A firmly held butt will cause a shortening of the ball motion, thus only utilise a firm butt grip when wishing to limit ball travel.

A lightly held butt will allow vastly greater ball movement and penetration into other areas of the field in play and allow one to find positions which may not have been available previously.

So one should take care not to grip the butt too tightly else they may succumb to dramatic loss of movement!

A firmly held butt will only allow short penetration from the shaft thus removing intended ball motion.

Tonight it's good to see Davis, Hazel, Parrot, Virgo, Hendry, Ding, Mark, and a full audience for the final. Some things haven't changed. Just thinking back to this thread and wondered who's watching?

Yesterday I saw Peter Ebdon in the audience. So much respect for him these days.

Aye it is but Parrot and Virgo are forced to leave once the 22/23 season finishes...no doubt because they need to fill the die-versity quota

I'm kissing the pink to the left bottom pocket, eyeing the brown for diversity. But it's hard to angle brown in the next "ball of color" shot. Do I go for yellow, is it inclusive or is it  racist?

I hesitate, looking at blue and green. No social points for sinking those. The game hangs on me potting another red, and another ball of color.

What to do now?

OH MY GOD I FORGOT BLACK! I'M SAVED!!!

I let it record onto the HDD as I wasn't really interested in either finalist. I might watch it for the lovely lady referee of course!

TBH I'm tired of Davis and Parrott. And Doherty was never any good in the foist place. Hendry and Murphy are the immediate future of punditry.

I love that you can still say that 😉

Ha 😁 I like that. I saw one of his time fillers. His accent is remarkable.

I enjoy Hendry, he gives insights into his own personality / attitude ( .. don't take you boot off the throat 😆 ) Murphy's growing on me ( he died his hair and had a gastric band fitted, lost 4 stone I think )

I thought he looked very different! Weight loss seems to be the fashion in Snooker, since Higgins did it. Allen has lost quite a bit too. He was turning into a rotund little goblin, and watching him reaching across the table was starting to remind me of a beached whale. So he's sensibly done something about it.

Great to see Trump turn it around to such a close finish after being 7-2 down, and despite being written off by almost everyone "backstage" this afternoon. The psychology, belief, and mind games in snooker make it all the more fascinating. Certainly the path towards 'levelling up' 😉 made it a very watchable and tense final 😆 I enjoyed hearing Rob Walker say "never give up".

The epitome of 'you learn summin new everyday'...

Was playing in a match last night and the frame went down to the black. After a few exchanges of safety the black was near the middle pocket, one of those where it might pot but so tight you'd have to be absolutely precise with aim and power. Ultimately decided if i went for it i'd probably miss and leave it. Some demon in my head possessed me to try a cross double to the opposite pocket which in hindsight i knew wasn't really on. Anyway, i missed and ended up going in-off in the corner pocket, and the frame was declared over. In all my time watching and playing i never came across the rule that a foul on the black ends the frame (unless the scores are tied, in which case a respotted black).

Isn't that sort of what happened in the match with Williams and Ding last week? The one where Ding had to hit a long black on the baulk cushion and managed to miss it. Foul. Frame (and thus match) over. Everyone said it was bizarre at the time.

Interesting i didn't catch that game so i've just searched for it. It's almost like my situation (same outcome - a foul on black ends the frame), but in this instance even if the match continued Ding was more than 7 points behind with only 7 on the table, whereas what confused me in mine was that i could still win if i potted the black as the foul left me only 1 point behind. But yes ultimately it's the same rule. I guess it's to stop a frame going on infinitely.

I am not casting any hard aspersions here, but I was wondering the same thing as this chap on the BBC comments, after watching the conclusion of the O'Sullivan V Brecel match. Even allowing for all of Ronnie's weirdness etc..

Yeah, was saying exactly that to my old man earlier....with Ronnie, people will just think he gave up and thought fuck it, I ain't in the mood today.

Nobody else would throw that big a lead without looking dodgy.

I would like to see Si Jiahui winning it. I guess that most of the general public will also be rooting for him now. I don't greatly dislike Selby, but I would rather he didn't win it again. I don't really mind if Allen or Brecel win it. Allen looks like a leprechaun, so maybe luck will be on his side this year. 🙂
