Musk is a big fan of the PC game Deus Ex. He simply took his idea of merging humans with AI from one of the 3 endings in that game where JC ("Jesus Christ"), who is a nanoaugmented clone, merges his brain with Helios the AI created by the Illuminati.

I never really chose this ending because I always felt that the AI was still controlled by the Illuminati in some way. I think its going to be the same thing with the microchip there is going to be a hidden backdoor for manipulation.
