Javed Khan is heading up the independent review on cutting smoking figures. The ex-CEO of Barnardo's has been tasked by Health Secretary Sajid Javid to conduct a review.

He will report back his findings in April, and said ahead of it: “Just look at the Covid experience, mass marketing has a big effect, it really works. The government went hell for leather, it made an enormous difference in vaccination rates. So why not do something like that again, if we really want to save people’s lives?"

Smoking rates have plunged across the country in recent years. The smoking ban is now over a decade old, too.

But there are fears more needs to be done, and Mr Khan is reportedly looking towards New Zealand as inspiration. The nation has some of the strictest smoking legislation and laws in the world.

New Zealand will ban the sale of tobacco to its next generation, with anyone born after 2008 unable to buy cigarettes or tobacco products in their lifetime.

As a smoker myself, this may seem strange to others, but I do partially agree with this.

I would like it if younger people were unable to start this habit from the off, but to be fair, I think with the price of cigarettes and tobacco as they are, if I was a young person, I'd find this highly unaffordable as things stand.

The only reason I can see that the tax on cigarettes has increased so much over the last few years, is because fewer people are buying them.

Its a squeeze on those consumers, who choose to continue with this habit. The less of us there are, the more revenue the government loses. So they compensate by increasing the amount of tax we have to pay.

However with regards to getting people to quit, it isn't always that easy, and I find this Mr Khan's comments about "Covid experience" and "mass marketing having a big effect" a bit concerning.

I already have to contend with grotesque warnings printed on the outer of my fag packets, how much further are they intending to go with this? 🤪

Sounds like we're joining NZ and Australia...
l smoke rollies and the price is beyond a joke now :O(

" Last week New Zealand announced its goal to be smoke-free by 2025, and now there are calls for Australia to follow their lead and start the phasing out of cigarettes in retail outlets across the country. As part of its Smoke free 2025 plan, New Zealand will prevent Kiwis born from 2011 onward from ever buying tobacco.

The new legal smoking age will increase every year, thereby making it illegal for future generations to be able to buy tobacco products...."

Oh I'm glad Covid was a mass marketing exercise.

Well we knew as much but there it is, bold as brass.

Smoking? Don't like it, never been tempted, avoid people who do it as the fumes and smell make me feel sick. Happy for there to be places people can puff in peace and without hassle (and vice versa). But I don't for a second believe this is being done for the good of the people. Never is.

Red herring if ever there was one. They don't give a fuck about you and they certainly don't give a fuck if you sick, they been poisoning the food chain for years in the hope you die. There's something else going on here with these attemps to ban smoking, that should become apparent in the near future, as they love to tell you in advance how they are going to fuck you.

The question has to be asked - Why are they doing this?

One answer might be that the government cares about you and wants to protect you and keep you healthy. Another answer might be that there is something in tobacco (and pot) that interferes with the transition to human 2.0.

Speaking of cannabis, how many know that the human body has it's own endocannabinoid system (ECS) that occur naturally inside us and helps to regulate many important bodily functions. Could that be why it's been kept illegal for so many years? Could tobacco have similar properties?
