Restoring Eden

Great film, needs more attention. Localize! Nature provides we are just not letting her do so, giving in to the insane systems of disefficiency and disharmony leading to disease surprise surprise. This is the other side of the great reset coin; getting out of the collective psychosis that financial systems and (large scale) governance are required to live.. when they really aren't at all :D - Breath and heartbeat happen automatically, everything else is energy exchanges, and we have let those slip out of our hands.

I constructed a modest (3600 square feet) Hugelkultur berm and swale system starting about six years ago for a food forest.

Mostly as an experiment, to learn how to design one, but multipurpose (Annual gardening food source also)

My goal wasn't to become self-sufficient on produce on the near term.

I wanted to design and plant a self-sustaining system I could leave for ten years and come back to and be able to feast off.

So far so good.

It has always puzzled me how people spend their money on landscaping.

Ever since the housing bubble replaced manufacturing I've watched as sturdy fixer upper homes were bulldozed and systematically replaced with inferior sawdust/glue particle board Mcmansions, then they scrape the lawn, install sod and inedible trees and plants.

Then they hire companies to spray chemicals every year to kill off any insects that might appear.

My approach is if I'm going to plant a tree it should bear fruit or nut, unless it's free. (I get free pine trees sometimes, lol)

Why bother planting a shrub unless it has berries? I have planted a few but my osage orange for example will eventually make good bow staves.

Why bother planting a tree unless it bears fruit or nuts or supports other trees that do?

People hate squirrels that much?

LOL

You're going to wish there were more squirrels around next year when the famine starts.
