Every culture used them and they also advanced mankind at key stages in history. What our society suffers from is a lack of psychedelics - we favour logic, science and technology to solve problems. Tibetan monks are said to be able to activate part of their minds and can live in a permanent state of dreaming. In the new movie Dune, I remember reading the Spice was meant to represent mushrooms and this is how the idea was created. It gave people abilities and knowledge if they consumed it.
