Macnamara
DuPont concealed decades-long chemical pollution linked to kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, high cholesterol, and ulcerative colitis Published: June 12, 2022 The story began in 1951, when DuPont started purchasing PFOA (which the company refers to as C8) from 3M for use in the manufacturing of Teflon. 3M invented PFOA just four years earlier; it was used to keep coatings like Teflon from clumping during production. Though PFOA was not classified by the government as a hazardous substance, 3M sent DuPont recommendations on how to dispose of it. It was to be incinerated or sent to chemical-waste facilities. DuPont’s own instructions specified that it was not to be flushed into surface water or sewers. But over the decades that followed, DuPont pumped hundreds of thousands of pounds of PFOA powder through the outfall pipes of the Parkersburg facility into the Ohio River. The company dumped 7,100 tons of PFOA-laced sludge into ‘‘digestion ponds’’: open, unlined pits on the Washington Works property, from which the chemical could seep straight into the ground. PFOA entered the local water table, which supplied drinking water to the communities of Parkersburg, Vienna, Little Hocking and Lubeck — more than 100,000 people in all. Bilott learned from the documents that 3M and DuPont had been conducting secret medical studies on PFOA for more than four decades. In 1961, DuPont researchers found that the chemical could increase the size of the liver in rats and rabbits. A year later, they replicated these results in studies with dogs. PFOA’s peculiar chemical structure made it uncannily resistant to degradation. It also bound to plasma proteins in the blood, circulating through each organ in the body. In the 1970s, DuPont discovered that there were high concentrations of PFOA in the blood of factory workers at Washington Works. They did not tell the E.P.A. at the time. In 1981, 3M — which continued to serve as the supplier of PFOA to DuPont and other corporations — found that ingestion of the substance caused birth defects in rats. After 3M shared this information, DuPont tested the children of pregnant employees in their Teflon division. Of seven births, two had eye defects. DuPont did not make this information public. In 1984, DuPont became aware that dust vented from factory chimneys settled well beyond the property line and, more disturbing, that PFOA was present in the local water supply. DuPont declined to disclose this finding. In 1991, DuPont scientists determined an internal safety limit for PFOA concentration in drinking water: one part per billion. The same year, DuPont found that water in one local district contained PFOA levels at three times that figure. Despite internal debate, it declined to make the information public. (In a statement, DuPont claimed that it did volunteer health information about PFOA to the E.P.A. during those decades. When asked for evidence, it forwarded two letters written to West Virginian government agencies from 1982 and 1992, both of which cited internal studies that called into question links between PFOA exposure and human health problems.) By the ’90s, Bilott discovered, DuPont understood that PFOA caused cancerous testicular, pancreatic and liver tumors in lab animals. One laboratory study suggested possible DNA damage from PFOA exposure, and a study of workers linked exposure with prostate cancer. DuPont at last hastened to develop an alternative to PFOA. An interoffice memo sent in 1993 announced that ‘‘for the first time, we have a viable candidate’’ that appeared to be less toxic and stayed in the body for a much shorter duration of time. Discussions were held at DuPont’s corporate headquarters to discuss switching to the new compound. DuPont decided against it. The risk was too great: Products manufactured with PFOA were an important part of DuPont’s business, worth $1 billion in annual profit. https://www.blacklistednews.com/article/82741/dupont-concealed-decadeslong-chemical-pollution-linked-to-kidney-cancer-testicular-cancer-thyroid.html

Macnamara
06/28/22 Bayer Loses Again: Supreme Court Upholds $87 Million Award in Roundup Cancer Case The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday dealt another blow to Bayer AG’s effort to defend itself against ongoing litigation over allegations that Roundup herbicide causes cancer, denying the company’s request for a review of a California trial loss. By Carey Gillam The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday dealt another blow to Bayer AG’s effort to defend itself against ongoing litigation over allegations that Roundup herbicide causes cancer, denying the company’s request for a review of a California trial loss. In declining to take up the case, the court let stand an $87 million award won by Alva and Alberta Pilliod. The jury originally ordered more than $2 billion in damages for the married couple, but the award was later cut by the court. Each of the Pilliods alleged they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after extensive use of Monsanto’s Roundup products. Bayer inherited the liability for that case and tens of thousands of similar lawsuits when it bought Roundup-maker Monsanto in 2018. The lawsuits allege that Roundup causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma and that Monsanto long knew of the cancer risks but failed to warn its customers. The litigation began in 2015 after the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as a probable human carcinogen with a noted association to non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Bayer maintains that the weedkiller does not cause cancer and had hoped the Supreme Court would find that federal law supersedes state laws with regard to warning language on product labels. But last week the Supreme Court also denied a request by Bayer to examine a separate Roundup cancer case in which plaintiff Edwin Hardeman was awarded $25 million. The Virginia law firm representing the Pilliods issued a statement Monday applauding the Supreme Court’s decision not to take up the case. The firm said in its statement: “The Miller Firm is pleased that the U.S. Supreme Court has put an end to Monsanto’s effort to evade responsibility for the harm it caused Alva and Alberta Pilliod by its malicious conduct. “The message from the jury and the courts is now loud and clear: Monsanto must stop profiting off the suffering of the Pilliods and countless others; and finally admit that Roundup can cause cancer.” Bayer issued its own statement, saying while it was not surprised given the Hardeman case denial, it “respectfully disagrees with the Supreme Court’s decision.” The company said the issue may surface again for Supreme Court consideration. The company stated: “There are likely to be future cases, including Roundup cases, that present the U.S. Supreme Court with preemption questions like Pilliod and Hardeman and could also create a Circuit split and potentially change the legal environment. “Bayer continues to stand fully behind its Roundup products, which are a valuable tool in efficient agricultural production around the world. The company is confident that the extensive body of science and consistently favorable views of leading regulatory bodies worldwide, including most recently by the European Chemicals Agency’s Committee for Risk Assessment, provide a strong foundation on which it can successfully defend Roundup in court when necessary.” The twin rejections by the Supreme Court came after another blow loss to Bayer by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. On June 17 the 9th Circuit panel of judges said in their ruling that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2020 assessment of glyphosate was so deeply flawed that the court was vacating the agency’s human health assessment of the weedkiller. The court found that the EPA used “inconsistent reasoning” in finding that the chemical does not pose “any reasonable risk to man or the environment.” The EPA failed to follow established guidelines for determining cancer risk, ignored important studies, and discounted expert advice from a scientific advisory panel in officially declaring that the weedkiller glyphosate was “not likely to be carcinogenic,” the court found. Bayer has been attempting to settle outstanding cases, which at one point totaled more than 100,000 plaintiffs, since 2020. Several firms accepted settlements for their clients, but many others did not. Several new trials are scheduled in the next few months. https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/bayer-supreme-court-roundup-cancer-case-pilliod/?utm_source=salsa&eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=5fc8a0ac-6422-4aa2-81b9-b1bb1506055b

Observations
Try to find a soft drink that doesn't contain sweeteners. They are slipped into everything. I can taste it, the bitterness, and then you check the ingredients and there is. The people lap it up. Spraying tables and near food, anti bacterial sprays, breathing it in like its fresh air. Rubbing chemicals on their skin. Licking their fingers. Pumping out time relased air fresheners. I can't stand the OCD behaviour. Transporting fresh food half way round the world, completely contrary to concerns about the planet, and spraying preservatives to keep it looking fresh. Waxy chemicals on the apples, that you can't wash off. Try scraping it with a knife. Sometimes you can see it. If people were really concerned about the planet, health and wellbeing, they would support their local farmers, suppliers, and independent businesses, bringing security to their local towns and villages. Their country. One of the worst things about covid hysteria is filling peoples brains and thoughts with useless information, leaving even less time to learn what really matters. All of these artificial smells and flavours take us further away from being human. We are meant to smell each other; it's our human instinct and institution. We are meant to see each others faces. We are meant to touch each others hands. I saw an advert on the back of a bus; blue gloved hands holding the hand of an elderly patient. I despair at the nature of the beast, and the willingness of the people. Edited July 12, 2022 by Observations 4

In a proposed class action filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California on Thursday, Jenile Thames said that Skittles were unsafe for consumers due to “heightened levels” of titanium dioxide, a food additive. According to the lawsuit, titanium dioxide will be banned in the EU next month after the bloc’s food-safety regulator deemed it unsafe due to its ability to change DNA. The action also claims that the additive, which is used in paint, adhesives, plastics and roofing materials, can cause DNA, brain and organ damage, as well as lesions in the liver and kidneys. “A reasonable consumer would expect that [Skittles] can be safely purchased and consumed as marketed and sold,” the complaint said. “However, the products are not safe.” https://www.rt.com/business/559137-mars-skittles-lawsuit-titanium-dioxide/

Macnamara
07/22/22 ‘An Assault on Children’s Brains’: Toxic Chemicals to Blame for Decline in Kids’ IQs Every baby born in America is contaminated with industrial chemicals and many of those chemicals — especially endocrine disruptors — affect brain development. By Environmental Health News By Barbara Demeneix and R. Thomas Zoeller Brain function, especially in children, is often evaluated by intelligence tests resulting in an Intelligence Quotient or “IQ.” IQ scores, after having increased for most of the 20th century, have been going down since the mid-1990s. The decline is well documented across Europe, the U.S. and Australia. Is this trend for real? Some technical issues related to IQ measurements may be playing a role. However, scientific studies show that chemical exposures harm brain function in our children. Every baby born in America (and in the developed world) is contaminated with industrial chemicals and many professionals — including numerous medical and scientific organizations — are focusing on the soup of chemicals in which we raise our children. Many of these chemicals affect brain development, especially endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Reducing exposure to these mixtures of chemicals offers the single best approach to improving the mental and physical health of our children. An assault on our children Endocrine-disrupting chemicals interfere with our hormones. Newborn babies are pre-exposed to mixtures of more than 200 endocrine-disrupting chemicals. These include phthalates, perchlorate, fluoride, BPA (bisphenol-A) and its substitutes, parabens, legacy chemicals such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) and DDT (dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane), and heavy metals including lead and mercury. What is worse: these chemicals are in the amniotic fluid and surround the baby during the first nine months of its life when the brain is forming at an incredible rate with thousands of nerve cells born per second. Contamination continues through the mother’s milk or formula, through the air the baby breathes, in the creams, lotions and baby wipes used on its small body and more. This is an assault on our children — our species’ next generation. The major culprits in reducing IQ Let’s go through some of the worst offenders. Consider phthalates. These chemicals are included in many consumer products, personal care products, processed foods, food packaging materials and medical supplies. Several studies have shown that exposure to these chemicals causes reductions in IQ. In addition, they have been found universally, from the Arctic to Antarctica, including in different species from ants to alligators. Perchlorate is a thyroid disruptor and is found in rocket fuel, fireworks and airbags, as well as in food packaging. It is present in groundwater and can be taken up through the food we eat. Perchlorate acts by reducing the ability of the body to use iodine — an essential ingredient in the formation of thyroid hormone. Perchlorate affects IQ by suppressing thyroid function and producing a state of thyroid hormone insufficiency. Fluoride that is often added to drinking water is another problem for brain development. One of the most clear-cut demonstrations of the fluoride-lowering effect on IQ came from Canada. A study led by Christine Till measured the IQ of Canadian children living in different cities. There was a stark contrast in IQ, equivalent to 10 points, with lower scores in children that had fluoride in their drinking water. BPA is the poster child of endocrine disruption, and its substitutes like BPS and BPF are equally problematic. A recent study found an increase in BPS use in thermal paper by 153% in a single year. Other studies on BPS exposure show decreases in psychomotor function at 2 years of age associated with increases in ADHD. Several studies have also shown that BPF decreases IQ, showing interference with the thyroid system, which is essential for normal brain development. The chemicals PCBs and DDT are considered “legacy” because their production was banned, but they both remain in our environment. Both of these chemicals decrease IQ in children and adults that were exposed as children. They act by interfering with the thyroid system. Mercury is known to damage brain development, including detrimental effects on IQ. An example is the 2.5 IQ points lost in the cohort of exposed South Korean children. And the mixture of all of these chemicals — and more — contaminate our children from conception to adulthood. Breaking this vicious cycle So yes — we are getting dumber. And we are watching it happen, pretending that the regulatory system that has overseen this debacle can reverse the trend. While focusing on IQ gives us a glimpse at what is happening, there are other trends that are just as disturbing: the rise in attention deficit disorder and autism, as well as other brain-based disorders. Although these trends will not be reversed overnight, we must find the political will to reduce these exposures. https://childrenshealthdefense.org/defender/children-brain-development-iq-endocrine-disruptors-chemicals/?utm_source=salsa&eType=EmailBlastContent&eId=4d9020e2-4c38-4822-b0ca-eb9e5698c9d2

Macnamara
Illinois Officials Hid That Chemicals Were In Drinking Water By RealClearWire August 9, 2022 at 11:09am By Adam Andrzejewski for RealClearPolicy Even though there were many warning signs that the drinking water in Illinois is tainted with “forever chemicals” that can stay in a person’s body for years and cause cancer and other diseases, the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency didn’t begin testing the state’s water utilities for the chemicals until August 2020. This is according to a new investigation by the Chicago Tribune, which reported that even after finding out the results, state and local officials downplayed them, “burying notices filled with technical jargon on government websites.” Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — known as PFAS — are long lasting chemicals found in many different consumer, commercial, and industrial products that break down very slowly over time. Last year, Congress allocated $10 billion for loans and grants to finance PFAS-related projects, and the EPA recently received $50 billion for drinking water, wastewater, and stormwater infrastructure projects. https://thepoliticalinsider.com/illinois-officials-hid-that-chemicals-were-in-drinking-water/?utm_campaign=TPI08092022BR2IE

Macnamara
World's most popular weed killer Roundup causes dramatic convulsions in worms even at low concentrations- and may affect the nervous systems of other animals and even humans, study warns Popular weed killer Roundup contains the active ingredient glyphosate A new study has found it causes convulsions in roundworms even at low levels The results suggest the herbicide has neurotoxic effects as well as carcinogenic There may be neurotoxic chemicals present in Roundup other than glyphosate By Fiona Jackson For Mailonline Published: 14:18 BST, 24 August 2022 | Updated: 14:52 BST, 24 August 2022 Even when the branded herbicide was diluted 300 times lower than the lowest concentration recommended for consumer use, it caused convulsions. Both types of Roundup also caused more seizures than the isolated chemical, suggesting there are other dangerous ingredients in the herbicide interacting with the worms' brains. Akshay S. Naraine, project lead and PhD student, said: 'It is concerning how little we understand the impact of glyphosate on the nervous system. 'More evidence is mounting for how prevalent exposure to glyphosate is, so this work hopefully pushes other researchers to expand on these findings and solidify research from where our concerns should be.' Roundup, developed by Monsanto and first released in 1974, is the world's most commonly used herbicide by volume and by land-area treated. An estimated 6.1 billion kilos of glyphosate has been sprayed across resistant crops globally from 2005 to 2014, and is used at both industrial and consumer levels. Several studies found that high doses administered to laboratory animals caused cancer and, in 2017, this was confirmed when Monsanto were taken to court. However, leaders at Monsanto and Bayer have persistently argued that Roundup is safe and non-carcinogenic for humans. These assertions have since been questioned, as they were found to be based on industry-led research rather than independent study. A 2019 study found that exposure to glyphosate can increase the risk of Hodgkin lymphoma in humans by as much as 41 per cent. Roundup is still available to purchase as the US Environmental Protection Agency, EU Regulators and UK government all maintain that glyphosate is not harmful to humans. The chemical is also incredibly pervasive, having been found in breakfast cereals, pet food and nappies. A report, published last month by the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found more than 80 percent of urine samples from children and adults in the US contained glyphosate. Despite the significant research into the herbicides carcinogenic effects, the impacts of glyphosate on the nervous system has yet to be fully understood. To probe this, scientists measured the convulsion response of roundworms to Roundup and isolated glyphosate. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-11141171/Worlds-popular-weed-killer-Roundup-causes-dramatic-convulsions-worms-study-warns.html
Macnamara
Tattoo ink can contain cancer causing chemicals that mutate in sunlight or are so small they can get into cells, experts warn Researchers found that nearly half of tattoo inks contain azo-compounds, which can degenerate under ultra-violet light into a chemical that could cause cancer Many also contained particles small enough to get into a cell's nucleus and trigger cancerous mutations About three in ten Americans have tattoos, estimates suggest, but the industry is largely unmonitored by regulators Blue and green tattoo dyes are already banned by regulators in the EU over potential cancer concerns By Luke Andrews Health Reporter For Dailymail.Com Published: 22:40 BST, 24 August 2022 | Updated: 23:03 BST, 24 August 2022 Tattoo ink may contain toxic cancer-causing chemicals, a new study finds. Scientists at State University of New York (SUNY) found that nearly half of a 56-sample of tattoo inks they investigated had azo-compounds, which degenerate under ultra-violet light — emitted in sunlight — into cancer-causing chemicals. About two in five Americans already have a tattoo, with the numbers continuing to rise as body art gains social acceptance. Little is known about what is actually in the inks used, researchers say, as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is not keeping a close eye on the industry. The SUNY researchers investigated several popular tattoo inks and presented their findings Wednesday at the fall meeting of the American Chemical Society in Chicago, Illinois. A tattoo is made up of two parts. The main piece is the pigment, which can be a molecular compound — like blue pigment — or a solid compound — such as titanium dioxide. They also contain carrier fluids — typically alcohol-based — that bring the pigment into position between two layers of skin. In the study, the scientists tested 56 inks and found several had substances that were not listed on the label. In one case, ethanol — which can help thin blood — was spotted in the tattoo ink. It was unclear whether this posed any health risks. Some 23 pigments — typically blues and greens — were also found to contain azo-compounds, which can become 'carcinogenic' if they are exposed to too much sunlight or lots of bacteria. Dr. John Swierk, the chemist who led the study, told DailyMail.com: 'We don't necessarily know what the pigments break down into and so that's the real concern. 'It's possible that you might have pigments that by themselves are safe, but that photodecompose into something of concern.' For the second part of the study, the scientists also investigated the size of particles in 16 inks used in tattoos. This showed that half — including black pigments — had particles below 100 nm, which were 'concerning' because they could 'get through the cell membrane and potentially cause harm.' Speaking at a press conference today, Swierk said: 'When you get down to that size regime you start to have concerns about nanoparticles penetrating cells, getting into the nucleus of cells, and doing damage and causing problems like cancer that way.' He added: 'Big companies manufacture pigments for everything, such as paint and textiles. These same pigments are used in tattoo inks.' The scientists are now aiming to build the first comprehensive database of ingredients in different tattoo inks in the United States. They have yet to investigate the impact of having a tattoo removed, which is typically done via a laser. Specific concern was raised over two pigments — blue 15:3 and green 7 — which potentially caused cancer in 2020 amid warnings from some scientists. The European Union — which includes 27 European countries but not the UK — banned their use in tattoos in January. But some authorities including those in Germany warned the ban was 'too far', saying more evidence was needed that they were potentially toxic. Tests by German regulators found both had a 'low level' of toxicity. These colors remain in use in the United States, and there is no sign that authorities are moving to ban them. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-11142319/Tattoo-ink-contain-cancer-causing-chemicals-experts-warn.html
