Former Labour peer Nazir Ahmed has been found guilty of attempting to rape a young girl and sexually assaulting a boy under 11 in the 1970s.   

Ahmed, who was formerly Lord Ahmed of Rotherham, was today found guilty of sexual offences against a boy and a girl dating back more than 40 years.

A woman told a jury at Sheffield Crown Court that Ahmed, now 64, had attempted to rape her in the early 1970s, when the defendant was about 16 or 17 years old but she was much younger.

The former politician was also found guilty of a serious sexual assault against a boy under 11, also in the early 1970s.

The jury was played a recording of a telephone call between the two complainants, made by the woman after she went to the police in 2016.

Tom Little QC, prosecuting, told the jury that the call was prompted by the man contacting the woman by email saying: 'I have evidence against that paedophile.'

Ahmed denied all the charges but was found guilty on Wednesday of two counts of attempted rape and one of serious sexual assault.

The former Labour peer resigned from the House of Lords in November 2020 after reading the contents of a conduct committee report which found he sexually assaulted a vulnerable woman who sought his help.

The report made him the first peer to be recommended for expulsion but he resigned before this could be implemented.

Ahmed was charged along with his two older brothers, Mohammed Farouq, 71, and Mohammed Tariq, 65, but both these men were deemed unfit to stand trial.

A gang of six men sexually exploited and abused vulnerable young girls after luring them over Facebook with the promise of drink and drugs, a court heard.

The group are accused of forcing the underage victims - aged between 12 and 15 - to engage in sexual activity between 2013 and 2017.

A court heard the men committed the offences against eight girls under the age of 16 in the Redditch area of Worcestershire.

Abdul Hussain, 21, Usmaan Asghar, 22, Arslan Tazarab, 25, Ethashan Tazarab, 21, Usman Ali, 28 and Numan Mohammed, 23, went on trial at Worcester Crown Court.

They are charged with a total of 24 sex offences going back almost ten years - including sexual assault and sexual activity with a child.

I know some people like to focus on ethnicity, and rape gangs that feature men with dark dark skin, but it's not just some brown people who organise such vile operations. A lot of sex crimes are also carried out by many nationalities. Sex trafficking, sexual slavery, and child rape is also a major problem with Eastern Europeans, affecting the UK.

Horrifying footage emerges of young women being groped by huge mob during NYE celebrations in Milan: Attacks mirror infamous Cologne 2016 sexual assaults

Italian police investigating the attacks carried out raids on Tuesday after 18 suspects - described as foreigners or Italians of North-African origin - were identified.

One is accused of sexually assaulting two young women and robbing another, while the other is accused of assaulting four girls and robbing another, the statement said. 

In the newly emerged video, the two German students are shown being mobbed by a group of men against security barriers in front of the square's cathedral.

The footage is interspersed with clips from Cologne New Year's Eve celebrations in 2016, when some 1,000 people - mainly of North African origin - carried out a series of rapes, sexual assaults and robberies.

Police in the city were also accused of failing to respond to the attacks against around 1,200 victims, with officials later speculating the attacks were organised.
