Confession

 

Most of Dahmer's victims had been rendered unconscious prior to their murder, although some had died as a result of having acid or boiling water injected into their brain. As he had no memory of the murder of his second victim, Steven Tuomi, he was unsure whether he was unconscious when beaten to death, although he did concede it was possible that his viewing the exposed chest of Tuomi while in a drunken stupor may have led him to unsuccessfully attempt to tear Tuomi's heart from his chest.^[203] Almost all the murders Dahmer committed after moving into the Oxford Apartments had involved a ritual of posing the victims' bodies in suggestive positions—typically with the chest thrust outwards—prior to dismemberment.^[204]

 

Dahmer readily admitted to engaging in necrophilia with several of his victims' bodies, including performing sexual acts with their viscera^[204] as he dismembered their bodies in his bathtub. Having noted that much of the blood pooled inside his victims' chest after death, Dahmer first removed their internal organs, then suspended the torso so the blood drained into his bathtub, before dicing any organs he did not wish to retain and paring the flesh from the body.^[205] The bones he wished to dispose of were pulverized or acidified, with Soilex and bleach solutions used to aid in the preservation of the skeletons and skulls he wished to keep. In addition, Dahmer confessed to having consumed the hearts, livers, biceps, and portions of thighs of several victims he had killed within the previous year,^[206] often tenderizing the flesh and organs prior to consuming them alongside condiments.^[207]

THE GAY SERIAL KILLERS THAT HAUNT OUR QUEER HISTORY

There’s something fascinatingly macabre about serial killers. Obviously, they’re horribly damaged people who inflict enormous pain, suffering, and terror on others. We’re not here to idolise them in any way, or turn them into quasi-celebrities.

 

But the trauma inflicted by serial killers that have targeted gay men is part of our history. Knowing your history is about understanding the bad stuff as well as the good stuff.

Let’s take a look at some of the notorious gay serial killers that have shaped our queer history.

Dennis Nilsen

Nilsen admitted to murdering at least 15 young men between 1978 and 1983. The media referred to him as the Muswell Hill murderer.

All of Nilsen’s murders were committed in the two North London addresses in which he lived between 1978 and 1983.

He would meet his victims in pubs and bars, take them back to his flat and then kill them.

In 1983, he was sentenced to life imprisonment. He died in 2018 as the result of complications from surgery. A coroner’s inquest found that he died from natural causes.

Colin Ireland

Convicted in 1993, Colin Ireland – known by the press as The Gay Slayer – was found guilty of the murder of five gay men.

Ireland suffered a severely dysfunctional upbringing. He committed various crimes from the age of 16, and had served time in your remand centres and prisons. While living in Southend, he started frequenting the Coleherne pub, a gay pub in Earl’s Court.

Ireland said he was heterosexual – he had been married twice – and that he pretended to be gay only to befriend potential victims. Ireland claimed that his motives were not sexually motivated. He was highly organised, and carried a full murder kit of rope and handcuffs and a full change of clothes to each murder. After killing his victim he cleaned the flat of any forensic evidence linking him to the scene and stayed in the flat until morning in order to avoid arousing suspicion from leaving in the middle of the night.

Ireland was convicted of killing Peter Walker, 45, Christopher Dunn, 37, Perry Bradley, 35, Andrew Collier, 33, and Emanuel Spiteri, 41.

Following his conviction, Ireland remained imprisoned until his death in 2012, at the age of 57.

Gary Ray Bowles

Gary Ray Bowles admitted to killing six men in 1994 from Florida to Maryland but was only convicted of three deaths.

Sometimes dubbed the I-95 Killer, most of his victims were found near the interstate corridor that spans the entire eastern seaboard of the US.

Investigators say that Bowles, originally from West Virginia, left an abusive household as a child and made his living as a sex-worker for a number of years. After two jail sentences for theft, robbery, assault, and rape, he moved to Daytona Beach in 1993.

Bowles was then living with his girlfriend, but the relationship ended when she discovered that Bowles had been a sex-worker. Bowles later told authorities that he blamed gay men for the end of his relationship.

Bowles was convicted of killing Walter Hinton, 47, John Hardy Roberts, 59, and Albert Alcie Morris, 37.

Appealing against the death penalty, lawyers for Bowles contended that he was too intellectually disabled to be executed.

Bowles was eventually arrested in Jacksonville, where he was living under a false identiy. The state of Florida executed Bowles, aged 57, in August 2019.

Stephen Port

In 2016, Stephen Port was convicted of the murders of Anthony Walgate, 23, Gabriel Kovari, 22, Daniel Whitworth, 21, and Jack Taylor, 25, as well as the rapes of three other men he drugged, and ten counts of administering a substance with intent, and four sexual assaults. In total, eleven men are known to have been victims of Port’s crimes.

Port, who lived in London, committed the crimes that he was convicted of over a period of three years. Meeting his victims through hookup apps and then drugging them with GHB.

Port was sentenced to life imprisonment, which he is currently serving.

Bruce McArthur

In February 2019, Bruce McArthur was convicted of the murder of eight men in Toronto. He was sentenced to eight concurrent life sentences.

McArthur, a 67-year-old landscape gardener from Toronto, was arrested in January 2018. He was initially charged in relation to the deaths of two men  –  police subsequently charged him in relation to six further cases.

The men that McArthur has admitted killing are Selim Esen, Andrew Kinsman, Majeed Kayhan, Dean Lisowick, Kirushna Kumar Kanagaratnam, Abdulbasir Faizi, Skandaraj Navaratnam, Soroush Mahmudi. All went missing during the years 2010–2017.

Police have confirmed that some of the victims were killed during a sexual assault or while being “unlawfully confined”. After the murders, McArthur dismembered the men’s bodies to avoid detection.

The arrest of McArthur confirmed the worst fears of many in Toronto’s gay village, who for years had whispered that a serial killer might be targeting their community.

Many of the victims were immigrants from South Asia or the Middle East who were not out to their families. Toronto’s gay village was supposed to be their safe place. Instead, it became the place where they met Bruce McArthur. The grandfather and father of two had come out as gay later in life, but had been a neighbourhood regular since the late 1990s.

Jeffrey Dahmer

Dahmer killed 17 men and boys from 1978 to 1991, when he was apprehended.

Most of his murders took place in the state of Wisconsin.

In 1992, he was sentenced to 15 terms of life imprisonment.

Dahmer was beaten to death in 1994 by a fellow inmate at the prison where he was serving his sentence.

John Wayne Gacy

Gacy murdered at least 33 teenage boys and young men between 1972 and 1978 in Chicago.

All of Gacy’s known murders were committed inside the house where he lived.

In 1980, Gacy was sentenced to death on 1980, and was executed in 1994.

Gacy became known as the Killer Clown – he often worked at children’s parties dressed as a clown.

J. M. Barrie, author (1860 – 1937)

 

 

Barrie’s love of young boys, which inspired him to create the timeless Peter Pan, is documented in the biography by Birkin (1979) (republished as Birkin & Goode, 2003).In 1894, Barrie married Mary Ansell, but their relationship soured because he showed little interest in sex. He met the young sons of the Llewelyn-Davies family in 1897, and was soon spending much of his time playing with them. An associate, Dolly Ponsonby, wrote that the boys “fill his life & supply all his human interest” (Birkin & Goode, 2003, p. 168), and he became passionately attached to two of them, George and the openly homosexual Michael. He took many photographs of the boys, some of them nude, but never made any sexual passes, according to the boys themselves. Barrie modeled the characters in The Little White Bird after himself and George; one suggestive passage about a sleepover reads (Barrie, 1902, chapter 19):

“Why, David,” said I, sitting up, “do you want to come into my bed?”

“Mother said I wasn’t to want it unless you wanted it first,” he squeaked.

“It is what I have been wanting the whole time”, said I, and then without more ado the little white figure rose and flung itself at me. For the rest of the night he lay on me and across me, and sometimes his feet were at the bottom of the bed and sometimes on the pillow, but he always retained possession of my finger, and occasionally he woke me to say that he was sleeping with me. I had not a good night. I lay thinking.

Barrie wrote the following to Michael on the eve of his eighth birthday (Birkin & Goode, 2003, p. 166):

My dear Michael,

Paris is looking very excited today, and all the people think it is because there were races yesterday, but I know it is because tomorrow is your birthday. I wish I could be with you and your candles. You can look on me as one of your candles, the one that burns badly — the greasy one that is bent in the middle. But still, hurray, I am Michael’s candle. I wish I could see you putting on the redskin’s clothes for the first time. Won’t your mother be frightened. Nick will hide beneath the bed, and Peter will cry for the police.

Benjamin Britten, composer (1913 – 1976)

The most important British composer of the 20th century. Britten was homosexual, and, according to biographer Donald Mitchell, “it was chiefly pre-pubescent boys to whom Britten was attracted” (Mitchell & Reed, 2011). Bridcut (2011) chronicles Britten’s many intense friendships with young boys between the ages of 9 and 14. Although clearly attracted to children, Bridcut (2011) concludes that Britten’s behavior never went beyond bed-sharing, kissing and skinny dipping.David Hemmings, who sang for Britten’s opera The Turn of the Screw, writes of Britten’s infatuation with him at the age of eleven (Mitchell & Reed, 2011):

I went on to stay with Britten in this wonderfully claustrophobic atmosphere and he cared for me, he developed my voice and he was a deeply considerate father figure. It was only later that I learnt that he was very much infatuated with me and that caused some problems between himself and his long-time companion, Peter Pears. In all of the time that I spent with him he never abused that trust.

And when I listen to The Turn of the Screw now, I remember that moment, and it is perhaps one of the best gifts that anybody could give anyone, and I thank Benjamin Britten for that because no one else could have given it to me — particularly at eleven years old.

Britten dedicated one of his arrangements to thirteen-year-old Bobby Rothman, with whom he had shared a room (Mitchell & Reed, 2011):

When Britten stayed with the Rothman family, he shared a room with the thirteen-year-old Bobby:

“[…] many an evening we used to spend […] a lot of time just really talking he in the bed next to me […] His fondness for me was something that was beyond my normal social connections, and I was a little overwhelmed that someone should be so fond of me […] I can still remember us talking late at night one time, and finding when it was really time to call it quits and go to sleep […] he said, ‘Bobby, would you mind terribly if, before we fell asleep, I came over and gave you a hug and a kiss?’ It was just one of those touching moments […] And I’ve got to say I really did not know what to do except say, ‘no, no I don’t mind’, and he gently got up and gave me a gentle hug and kiss and said goodnight.”

André Gide, novelist (1869 – 1951)

Author of The Immoralist and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature. In his journal, Gide distinguishes between adult-attracted “sodomites” and boy-loving “pederasts”, categorizing himself as the latter (Gide, 1948, p. 246-247):

I call a pederast the man who, as the word indicates, falls in love with young boys. I call a sodomite (“The word is sodomite, sir,” said Verlaine to the judge who asked him if it were true that he was a sodomist) the man whose desire is addressed to mature men. […]

The pederasts, of whom I am one (why cannot I say this quite simply, without your immediately claiming to see a brag in my confession?), are much rarer, and the sodomites much more numerous, than I first thought. […]

That such loves can spring up, that such relationships can be formed, it is not enough for me to say that this is natural; I maintain that it is good; each of the two finds exaltation, protection, a challenge in them; and I wonder whether it is for the youth or the elder man that they are more profitable.

Gide was bisexual, although he preferred boys. His journal approvingly describes the bodies of a 12-year-old boy and young girl (Gide, 1948, p. 334):

Both at Saint-Martin and here I have seen, among the guests of the hotel, none but faces exuding stupidity, egotism, and vulgarity. (Except for a Greek boy of twelve with a marvelous face and body,

wonderfully svelte; but excessively aware of his beauty and, consequently, quite stupid with self-satisfaction.) Yet at the next table to the one where I am writing, and turning her back to me, a girl, barely beyond childhood, with great elegance in her outlines, whom M. would like. I do not tire of looking at her; she notices this and, I believe, is amused by it. But already one can foresee just where her features are going to thicken and become heavy.

In the company of Oscar Wilde, he had several sexual encounters with young boys abroad (Gide, 1935, p. 288):

Wilde took a key out of his pocket and showed me into a tiny apartment of two rooms… The youths followed him, each of them wrapped in a burnous that hid his face. Then the guide left us and Wilde sent me into the further room with little Mohammed and shut himself up in the other with the [other boy]. Every time since then that I have sought after pleasure, it is the memory of that night I have pursued. […]

My joy was unbounded, and I cannot imagine it greater, even if love had been added. How should there have been any question of love? How should I have allowed desire to dispose of my heart? No scruple clouded my pleasure and no remorse followed it. But what name then am I to give the rapture I felt as I clasped in my naked arms that perfect little body, so wild, so ardent, so sombrely lascivious?

For a long time after Mohammed had left me, I remained in a state of passionate jubilation, and though I had already achieved pleasure five times with him, I renewed my ecstasy again and again, and when I got back to my room in the hotel, I prolonged its echoes until morning.

Gide’s novel Corydon, which he considered his most important work, erects a defense of pederasty.

Some of the UK ’s most popular fruit and vegetables are covered in more than 100 pesticides, according to new research .

Every year, the UK government tests samples of food and drink for traces of pesticide residues.

The latest report , analysed by Pesticide Action Network (PAN), has found that grapes (both dried and fresh), oranges and herbs contain the highest amount of pesticides.

 

Other items making the list of the 12 most polluted products, being dubbed “the dirty dozen”, include pears, beans (dried and fresh), okra, lettuce, carrots and mango.

These foods contained traces of a total of 122 different pesticides.

Researchers found that 80 per cent of grapes, herbs and oranges tested contained more than one pesticide and just one-kilogram sample of sultanas contained 25 different chemicals.

Of the 122 chemicals identified, 61 per cent are classed as “ highly hazardous ” by the UN, PAN said. Additionally, 47 have links to cancer and 15 contain “reproduction or developmental toxins” that can have an adverse effect on sexual function and fertility.

Of course a lot of people can see it. Not everyone's stupid! Corporations don't promote anything for altruistic reasons! Corporations only want to make more wealth and increase their power. The gay movement was originally a grass-roots movement, but human greed and ambition co-opted these movements. The devil leads people astray using temptations and distractions.

A lot of groups are out there helping disabled people who could do with your help! If it's something you feel so strongly about, why don't you do something practical to promote disability?
