Virgin Orbit was a foolish idea; it could never have competed with SpaceX’s small satellite ride-share program. SpaceX, by the way, is the company that every investor would love to invest in but can’t because it’s a private company. SpaceX is currently valued at over 137 billion dollars. 20 million pounds from taxpayers bought new infrastructure at the airport, and on the grand scale of things, it’s a drop in the bucket - not even enough to build a mile of motorway.
