A California family of three that had been reported missing this week was found dead Tuesday along with their dog in a remote area of the Sierra National Forest, according to authorities.

The family was reported missing by a friend Monday night and search teams located their vehicle near a Sierra National Forest gate leading to Hites Cove in California.

John Gerrish, Ellen Chung, 1-year-old daughter Miju, and their family dog were later found dead near an area known as Devil’s Gulch in the Southfork of the Merced River drainage, according to the Mariposa County Sheriff's Office.

"This is never the outcome we want or the news we want to deliver, my heart breaks for their family," said Sheriff Jeremy Briese. "Our Sheriff’s Chaplains and staff are working with their family and will continue to support them during this heartbreaking time." https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-family-3-dog-found-045619175.html

Louis Casiano
Fri, August 20, 2021, 6:59 PM

Autopsies completed Thursday on a Northern California couple and their 1-year-old daughter who were found dead this week on a hiking trail in a national forest failed to reveal how they may have died, prompting investigators to keep digging into the mysterious deaths.

John Gerrish, his wife, Ellen Chung, their daughter, Miju, and their dog were found Tuesday on a hiking trail near Hite’s Cove in the Sierra National Forest. https://www.yahoo.com/news/california-mystery-autopsy-fails-reveal-015953887.html

Area where California family was found dead in Sierra National Forest closed due to 'unknown hazards'

Jordan Mendoza, USA TODAY
Wed, September 1, 2021, 1:40 PM

Several hiking trails and recreational sites near where the bodies of a California family were found were closed in the Sierra National Forest this week due to "unknown hazards."

The U.S Forest Service's order that went into effect on Sunday came one day before the agency announced all national forests in California would be closed through Sept. 17 due to the spread of wildfires in the state. However, the closures alongside the Merced River near where the family was found are in effect through Sept. 26.

Officials said the decision was "due to unknown hazards found in and near the Savage Lundy Trail," the same one where John Gerrish, Ellen Chung, their 1-year-old daughter, Miju and family dog were found dead near on Aug. 17.

Someone else watch and tell me is it all out spooky or what? Ok, that person was me a few minutes later.... Sheer terror? No.  😏

- all 46secs as tame as a wwhhaaaaaaaaaaatt, j/k.

(Nah... *Nothing to scare*)

Ps, if it were in happier circumstances, I like the BigFoot idea...

Like BigFoot offering me to have a picnic with me!!!! 🥗🦧👣 I would tickle his feet for him, as long as he paid me the respect! ... 😉

So if you need an autopsy to find cause of death, does this rule out murder ? Obviously they weren't strangled or stabbed/shot.

Not too dis-similar I guess an anomalistic (hitman) murder in south of france I think it was some years back...

Anyone remember!?!?

~~~ An intervening cyclist was trying to help members of a car, (again I think a family?).. Well, the samaritan cyclist got killed into the bargain...
Buuut... Culprit wise I never did get sure of the outcome, and neither/nor I think did the authorities, unless -as is likely- what authorities find out was cluelessness..  because of remoteness and no evidence.
So anyway, it is (for me anyway) a bit reminscent kinda of this other seperate incident some years back.
and the fact that "autopsy failed"......
i don't buy that,i mean i do if they are trying to cover up something
it failed to find an observable cause of death so that suggests an invisible cause of death
very easy to kill a family out camping by simply pumping noxious gas into their tent as they sleep
this sometimes happens to people in camper vans on the continent where organised gangs pump gas into a van which knocks the inhabitants unconscious before they then enter the van and rob them. I know someone this happened to. You can get specialist alarms that detect the common gases used for this
In the case we are looking at here the thing that caused the death killed all of them so they have all been exposed to the same thing. Gas is an obvious method of death
They weren't in a tent, they had gone for a hike and were found only 1.5 miles from their truck (and he worked for Snapchat, not Google)
Autopsy unclear: Jonathan Gerrish, Ellen Chung, daughter Miju and dog die on California hiking trail - The Washington Post
Gerrish was in a seated position with the baby and dog beside him, according to the Chronicle. Chung was a little farther up the hill.
Authorities still don’t know how they died. Autopsies yielded no conclusive results about the cause, CNN reported. A toxicology report, which could take several weeks, is pending.
A necropsy is being performed on Oski, the dog, but the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office said no other animals were found dead in the immediate area.
The first thing toxicologist do is test the blood for poisons. Poisonous gases would be found if that were the case. Plus, it's hard to do when you have a dog with your and you're in undeveloped terrain. Plus gas dissipates in the open air, gas poisoning only works in enclosed places. These people were hiking, on the move. Not sitting idle in an enclosed space.
Plus our bodies process differently between each other and dogs. They were ALL dead together. This case actually reminds me of the Russian Dyaltov Pass
incident in Russia, except this being the Devil's Gulch in California.
He had worked for google as a software engineer
You don't know that they hadn't been killed elsewhere and then moved to that location
The person i know who was gassed in a camper van had to have a blood test but it wasn't a usual bloodtest. They didn't just take blood from a vein, they had to take it from an artery or something like that. Apparently it was a very painful procedure and from memory i think the sample was taken from the wrist or hand or something like that but it had to be taken from deep in and not from a surface vein
Was that kind of test conducted with the autopsy?
If i was the family i would go in there with an independent doctor to ensure such tests were done before the bodies are cremated. If there was foulplay money and or threats could convince a pathologist to overlook something
All those poisonous fungus. You have to eat to be poisoned from. The poison algae, mines are just them throwing anything and hoping something sticks. I know that they didn't put an INFANT in a public river. Plus, those Mercedes river algae signs could be something newly placed there to deceive the public
They're not trying to find the truth but simply something the public will fall far. Homeless people eat fish from the uncleanly canals in Phoenix and don't die. Plus algae water is good for your health.
Algae water hasn't killed anyone in Phoenix. https://www.google.com/amp/s/ktar.com/story/1759835/phoenix-says-seasonal-algae-causes-odd-smell-taste-drinking-water/amp/
There is a type said to be toxic blue-green algae but it's in pond, still waters and must be CONSUMED to be toxic which I doubt these hikers encountered, would consume and give to a BABY👶.
i agree
something very effective and potent has wiped them out. Either a deliberate hit or a robbery gone wrong which is now being obfuscated
I think it's very telling that the authorities have closed off the area to other hikers.  It's not a case of heat stroke, which considering the temperature that day, would have been an option.  They wouldn't have closed off the area for heatstroke.
The California Department of Justice and sheriff's office workers are investigating the deaths, which are being handled as a hazmat and coroner investigation.
“We know the family and friends of John and Ellen are desperate for answers, our team of Detectives are working round the clock," said Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese in a statement last week.
"I've worked in different capacities but I’ve never seen a death like this," Briese told reporters.
