Cats to be banned from leaving property under plan to protect wildlife

Is this the next insanity act coming to Everywhere?

A council in Melbourne, Australia, has introduced a ‘cat curfew’ that bans the animals from leaving their homes.

Pet owners in Knox City will be forced to keep their cats on their property 24 hours a day under the new rules, which start on October 1.

The regulations have been brought in to protect wildlife, including birds and reptiles.

The legislation states cats should be kept in the house, garage or shed and should be only allowed into the yard if there is cat-proof fencing.

Rangers will catch any felines caught outside or on someone else’s property, with owners facing fines of up to $545 (£295.71) or court proceedings, news.com.au reports

The regulations are part of Knox City’s Domestic Animal Management Plan targeting feral and nuisance cats.

Knox City Council Mayor Lisa Cooper said: ‘Much like the rules for dogs and other pets, cats won’t be allowed to roam freely from their owners’ property.

‘When allowed to roam, cats are at a much higher risk of illness and injury.

‘Keeping cats within their owners’ property also protects wildlife and prevents them causing nuisance for neighbours and their pets.’

Several people on social media were not happy with the new rules, with one person saying cats were nocturnal and it didn’t make sense to keep them inside at night.

But the council said the rules were brought in after a successful trial last year, which implemented a sunset to sunrise curfew.

Officials added 90% of residents supported the trial, including some cat owners..

There are currently more than 6,500 registered cats in Knox City.

Council papers state: ‘This order aims to prevent cats wandering at night and nuisances such as spraying and fighting, and to protect native wildlife.

‘Community consultation in developing this plan found that 85% of survey respondents supported the introduction of a cat curfew.’

Bout bloody time , back in the 30's or 40's the CSIRO did a feasibility study and determined that feral cats in the Australian bush was a large problem even back then and until now nothing has been done , between them and foxes we have basically no native animals smaller than a paddy melon now in a lot of areas unless in fenced off reserves. Sorry, if I see any cat on my place I don't care who owns it ,its shot .

Yes I do so things are very different here and cats and foxes are a big problem right across the country not to mention wild dogs ,we own a dog and have to keep it on the property as there are permanent baiting programs running in the  area with 1080.

That's not to say I would let her run amuck if there wasn't

I don't let my dog roam freely and hunt all the ducks, geese and other animals either. If you have a cat then you are responsible. You mention mice but cats are well known to cause bird decline. I rather see and hear a lot of songbirds than domestic cats. Those birds already have natural predators, the cats put further strain on their populations. We can't have green space everywhere so thinking about other animals and not just the cats is sensible. If I had a cat I would keep it inside. If that is ''unnatural'' than why have even have a pet that can't be around humans all day? So they get catfood and are also allowed to hunt. That's a luxury and an impact that dogs don't have. Cats are privileged and annoying.

We have native mice here which are not a problem the type you are referring to is another bloody introduced pest  . So correct me if I'm wrong but what you are saying is let the cats eat the mice ,so the cats bread up and eat all the mice ,what happens what happens when  the mice are gone ,what do the cats eat then

Not as much as humans.

And don’t start banging on about how much harm cats and foxes and wild dogs do to wildlife and the environment; humans haven’t got a leg to stand on there; the biggest most vicious predators on this earth.

So because I'm a human I can't mention that domestic cats are a problem to wildlife populations??

It's like saying ''you're white... you shouldn't discuss slavery cuz you are white''

As someone who rescues and rehabilitates wild animals for a living it's obvious to me that behind humans cats cause most of the deaths and injuries I see.

I think the recent stats are about 30 million wild birds a year and around 70 million other animals in the UK. Domestic cats are the reason our wild bird population is rapidly declining while beautiful creatures such as grey squirrels are persecuted for money and a desire to test out genetic engineering tech on them.

These people decide to get a domesticated pet and then decide to let it out to kill and shit whatever and wherever it wants. If I set a dangerous dog onto their cats everyday they'd be the first to complain (and rightly so)

When they say it's just nature I know I'm talking to someone totally detached from both nature and reality. These are domesticated pets and the owners bare the responsibility for them.

I don't feel comfortable with cats or their owners being persecuted though, a lot of cat owners (been one myself love the little buggers) are decent people who will put a bell on a collar to warn wildlife and from my experience with dealing with them, the people who will impose these restrictions don't give a fuck about animals really.

Still it's definitely a problem for British wildlife and the struggles they face to survive.

Precisely, that would inter-species cultural Appropriation. I've already been cancelled for urinating in the cat's litter tray as someone else was in the downstairs toilet.

I knew it was the common "house mouse." I never made any comment about whether to "let cats eat the mice": I just commented I'd seen articles online about the millions of mice.

Mod note

seriously people in a cat thread,in a friking cat thread....please stick to the topic

anyone who lives in house and has a cat knows it's imposible to keep it inside

I like to hear songbirds and see a diversity of birds around. Cats are useful on farms to catch mice but it's not controversial to suggest there are too many cats. There aren't infinite songbirds, their populations can decline. Cat owners not liking that and complaining are just being reactionary. They ignore the impact of cats, and just don't like the facts.
