I wish I'd done black and often say I'm black belt anyway ( pride) . There's 2 brown belts. 1st brown and 2nd brown. 2nd brown is pretty identical to black but to be awarded black you have to commit to take a class and teach and I just couldn't/ didn't have the time to to that. It's a good rule.
JONJAY79
I did martial arts for lots of years then went to a Brazilian jiujitsu class and got smashed by 90% of people there. I'm in my 50s still train Brazilian jiujitsu and still wirk the bags with kicks punches. Jocko gives some good tips on self defence . Martial arts fall into two camps the one's who practise mainly theoretical scenarios and the other one where you actually learn to spar and Bjj roll going few rounds. Yeah a lot of folks seem to say that BJJ is a great one for real life defence and exercise. Do you think from your experience someone with a bit of a dodgy elbow could participate in this practise? Or just dependent on the intstructor/school?

BPC157 great for healing ligaments and tendons. Find a school you feel comfortable in and don't be in a rush to learn .

Which ones you do and which ones you would recommend for a 41 year old middle aged guy to take up? Remove that "middle aged" notion :) Krav Maga or BJJ I recommend, coupled with some sort of strength training - kettlebells are great.

If you have a dodgy elbow you're already one step ahead :) everyone ends up injured somehow, but the key is to manage the injuries, as that's part of the body's adaptation to new stimuli. 1

That's awesome thank you. BJJ really appeals I would love to try. Or some other type of grappling. Just need to find the right teacher. Yes thank you. Still young at heart. Rayvn
I currently do Taekwondo, Tuekoomoosol, Haidong Gumdo and Korean archery. I started in my early 40s with MMA and Shaolin Kempo. Also did a little Karate, but gave that away as it was messing with my Taekwondo which I compete in. I would recommend finding a reputable dojo that isn't just a fight club but also teaches the Eastern spiritual aspects as well. Martial Arts is meant to be a wholistic lifestyle choice. I study with a shaolin monk in the USA online too. I balance my training with Qigong which is like tai chi. A way of moving purposely in meditation helps you gain Mastery over the mind as well as promoting health. Learning to be a peaceful but lethal person has changed my life. A warriors mindset is essential for these times I feel. I wish you a good journey of knowledge and self discovery

Just want to learn a few moves that a simpleton could use realistically. I also do have a slight injury in my right arm. In regular state it's fine, but if I stress that arm with push ups or punches it gets flared up at the elbow so would prefer not to have to do this. So preferably looking at one of the arts that can still be used, but is more likely to have an accomodating teacher who will understand that if they want me to strike or be in arm bar holds, that left arm only! And lay off all the crazy push up fitness stuff.. I'm not sure which one is best. I'm 6ft 5 so if I were younger I would be tempted by taekwondo or maybe kick boxing, but I'm not sure if taking that up in your 40s is a great idea. I used to do ju jitsu but found it wasn't practical because if they teach you it properly you break people's necks and stuff so you end up not really practising properly. Brazilian Ju jitsu looks great, but worried about the arm bar holds. Guess it may come down less to the actual art, but in finding a teacher who is accomodating to slightly order folks and their body issues! :) I took Taekwondo up in my early 40s. And now Just completed my first black belt test. I took a truck load of work, dedication, conditioning and now can kick lethal at head height. Which is pretty awesome for a chick of my vintage. But in honesty, head kicks look pretty, but if my life were on the line I would be sinking some powerful kick combos alot lower. If you put the work in, have the right mindset, anything is possible. And don't be affraid of getting hurt or injured. I always have some injury meh they heal. 1

Nah, my trainer is a life long Taekwondo world champion in her 60s and still extremely fit and flexible, head kicks and still winning tournaments. Granted I do 4 classes a week plus weight training, yoga, pilates and Qigong which all help in conditioning and strengthening the body for Taekwondo. I have gone from being a regular chick to being a very fit athletic middle aged weapon in the best health of my life. If you are willing to put the work in, be disciplined you will get the results you want. I can chase down, catch and take down my 6ft grandson and I am only a 5ft 55kg woman. The only thing I severely lack in in ground tactics. I only did maybe 2 year of Jui Jitsu a few years back. I really want to get more lethal with ground grappling, because at the moment, I am pretty fly with weapons, kicks, hand techniques, throws..... but if a big guy got me on the ground, I am in trouble. My club does Judo, so thinking I might start that this year. Edited December 26, 2022 by Rayvn

Certified Green of Heart
I really enjoyed watching this guy, [[Sifu Ben Der]] FIRST TIME I've seen him, I can see he's an honest teacher, and knows the secret to being happy also at the same time.... Also at the start of the video he mentions IpMan and BruceLee (who wouldn't as at two points in his life Bruce and him intersected, once in school, and at least a little in USA as both of them travelled there too from Hong Kong).... but more importantly for this video moving on from those mentions, he demonstrates HIS OWN skill & experience in front of these students, and lets them be sure what some of the precepts of Wing Chun are, in practice as well a few guiding principles which are kinda mentioned more toward the end in verbal... However there is a really nice introduction to Sifu Ben Der himself first of all by one of his own grateful & loyal students. Watch how the Chi Sao works a little bit.... I guess it forms the basis both in training and I assume probably in beyond training too?? ...but anyway the Chi Sao center line interplay of arms using mainly your elbows and forearms which like for like everyone knows we saw IpMan & Bruce do back when they did the exact same thing..= Integrity of Tradition upheld. So all keeping consistent and all obviously comes from (as the video titles says)... from the *nucleus* of Wing Chun teachings and that's just what Sifu Ben Der shows us and the students as we practice to feel~ each~ others~ energy~ in Chi Sao. (ps, I'm pretty sure I heard get acknowledged how then Wing Chun might be applied to or form the basis for other martial art such as JKD stuff.. but in this video he doesn't talk JKD as such as the focus is strictly Wing Chun....anyway great watch, I would say especially for beginners as myself!!)
