Michi713
Thanks! Wow either Simon de Covino ate some bad cheese or google’s AI needs to study more Latin. Even the prologue is a hot mess. Most of the poem is unintelligible. It’s 44 pages. It reads as if some long winded nut on the forum wrote it.
Michi713
Preface written by a French scholar in 1841: The pamphlet here published borrows what may be of interest from the great catastrophe which devastated the known world in the middle of the fourteenth century. The Black Death 'devastated the West, filled towns and countryside with victims, stirred up the sect strange Flagellants, caused the massacre of the Jews; as such, it is important; it still has them because it is a formidable example of the bubo plague invasions in Europe, invasions which, since the seventeenth century, have been limited either to the coastline of this part of the world, or to the borders by which it affects Muslim countries. The author of this piece of verse is a certain Symon de Covino, "Maistre Symon deCuiro, doctor of Paris and great astrologian," who predicted the great mortality that was at that time. The book was composed in Paris in 1350. Its subject is that of Boccaccio. Certainly his verses are far from worth the prose of the Italian author; but he has the merit, great for us, of having been an eyewitness to what he tells us, and it can serve to supplement and confirm certain peculiarities of the history of the Black Death. The name that the author gives to this disease, pestis inguinaria, shows that it was the bubo plague, the true plague of the East. “A burning pain,” says our poet, “sometimes begins in the groin, sometimes in the armpits, or spreads to the precordial region. Fatal fevers seize the vital parts; the “heart and lungs are totally infected; the respiratory tract “abhors this virus; also the forces suddenly fall, and "the patient can only endure this scourge for a short time. " days. " A singular thing is that, according to the author, the plague marked, its influence on the whole population: "The pale face," the redness of the face takes on a dark shade; there is hardly a single living being on which pallor has not left an imprint. It suffices to have the face of men and women to "read there the fatal handwriting and the blow which threatens them; this "pale hue announces the approaching death, and before the fatal day the “Death appears to be sitting on the face. " “In so many places, has reigned for so many years. While it was ravaging the peoples of the South and the East, the Western nations and the cold regions of the North confided in vain in the greatest purity of their atmosphere. Nothing is useful, neither the heat, nor the cold, nor the salubrity of the countries, however great it is. Whether high mountains or deep valleys, an island in the sea, a muddy plain, a" land bristling with rocks, a forest, a sandy shore, a "swamp, the disease is spreading everywhere We wait for winter, the" cold is ineffective against her; the heat of summer, the sweetness of spring, the course of the moon, the revolution of such and such a star, nothing can stop its ravages. It does not matter that the aquilon "replaced the humid south wind, that of the. sunset has no more force than that of the rising; no breath is salutary, on "whatever side of the horizon it comes." After the plague which devastated Marseilles in 1720, the doctors who had treated the sick in this afflicted city were divided on the question of contagion; nowadays, this question has arisen again, and several doctors deny that this disease has the property of being transmitted. In this plague, mortality mainly struck the lower classes. "The one," says our author, "who was malnourished with insubstantial food, fell struck at the slightest breath of the disease; the vulgar, a very poor crowd, die a well-received death, for to live is to die. But the cruel fate “respected the princes, the knights, the judges; of these few "succumb, because a sweet life is given to them in the" world. This remark on the greater mortality among the lower classes relative to the upper classes, was done too many times not to depend on permanent conditions; and probably Simon de Covino touched the real cause by saying that the sweet life in this world was the one that lasted the longest. The mortality was excessive. Mr. Hecker, in the work quoted above, estimates the loss which Europe made to a quarter of its population. Simon de Covino carries it much higher. According to him, barely a third of the men are alive. "The number of people “Buried," he said, "was greater than the very number of quickly vanls; cities are depopulated, a thousand houses are locked, a thousand have their doors open, and, empty of inhabitants, are "Filled with rot. " The thought of the times held that important events and, in particular, epidemics, were under the influence of certain conjunctions of planets; the doctors did not hesitate to share it. It is to a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, which happened in the year 1345, that the origin of the disease was generally attributed. This influence was called, in astrological language, higher root; the set of secondary causes which modified its action, such as the temperament of individuals, their food, their age, etc., was called the lower root. Our author, I will not say our poet, also wonders about the dreadful scourge which suddenly came to disturb the men of the fourteenth century, and suddenly made the cemeteries too narrow. "Why," he said, "does divine power multiply." "Does the number of the people work to increase the number?" "Why, after he has filled all the cities of the kingdoms, has God cast his features on those he ruled, overthrown them, and caused them to perish by the sword, by the fire, by the waters?" , by the "plague, those he had multiplied?" The author tells himself well that it was the sins and crimes of men that drew this misfortune upon them. The author claims that during the plague the passions of human beings went wild with more license and fury. The fact is that these irresistible scourges always exert unfortunate influence on the morale of men. Such has been the experience of all time; in the plague of the fourteenth century, in addition to the evil deeds of which the individuals became guilty, a deep emotion seized the masses themselves; and while the Flagellants, troubled by the threat of an imminent death, were seized with an erratically contagious year and indulged in the strangest atonements, a bloody fury drove the peoples against the Jews, and filled most cities with scenes of murder and devastation. It is evident that under the blow of these terrible and unexpected plagues, the intellect ceases to be master of itself; the regular order of the world being perverted, the moral order is in turn perverted, and the populations scattered on the surface of the globe participate in what might be called the irrationality of nature. Michi713
Prologue written by Covino vivhiin l domo is addressed in their own prop and the gods of their own party invited. And this description means planet Saturn was joined in his own home Saturday, which is the year of Capricorn c.ccïlv in three months, namely January, February and March; nevertheless not have been deepened in conjunction with Saturn, but one after another person in a different time of three months, and especially in that intenlio to describe magnam conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn, which would result in Aquarius for nine years only once. And this is a significant coujunction large and IRABOR! ( means I lift my hands in prayer to God) I am- alas, according to the statements of philosophers. Hence Aristotle in his book says property- blocked by elements of Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, realm, and are still scare depopulaîae. When they arrived at the convi- Buixas said, "and come to Jupiter, Saturn, started with discoid between Saturday and Jovein (Jupiter) race. And for this, I will describe the hostility arises against these two planets both in complexion and in operation; Saturn is cold and dry excessive, and thus corrupting human life ; JUPITER is warm and temperate; hurnanae so called friends of nature. - And follow the second part of this book upon a cause, and an altercation of these two sources of the planets, the sun is said to be the judge, and with good reason, since He is the king and the prince of all the other planets. According to a heart cell called pliilosopborum. Because the heart of man is in the middle of the body bu- like mani and Governor of all limbs, as Aristotle says the animals, so the sun is in the middle of the planets. Also, when the light of all the bodies of the celestial orders by means of the flow in etagant in this lower world, but only those from the sun, nor shall have the light, so that many people say pbilosopb, it follows that all things seem to be their own and the powers of the bodies of the celestial orders iníluentias shall have from the sun. From this it is clear that all judgments operate on the principles of heavenly bodies dependent on the sun. But most agree the bœc all of us who have spoken in this mateiia they are, their true selves, which, from the entrance of the Sun in the Arietein depend on all the signification of a conjunctionu'a all the other planets that are following the ipsum entering in of the |) er the whole of the year as far as the revoliitionem of the following year. It is there that the sun is said to be, and be lifted up, and to be crowned as the king of that is, in the battering-rams. in the throne of his majesty, was not from God, in which it was created in. Then there is the first pèsitus as Plato and theology. logorum which is in agreement that the Scriptures say: the earth bring forth herb virentern, and so on. So, therefore, I confirm the cause of what is of aid in the solca is moved between the Saturn and the Jovcm judieia. And then I will describe the judgment seat, and the manner and form of His enthronement. Saturn, he sets forth the heavens, and Cora, this king of rai ceeded in to the pulling down of the human race, or the judge, and Jupiter, he mentions their own defense. Having cited the arguments of both sides, Wednesday .; The promoter curiae rises like the sky. In addition the time of entering into Aries Lent a year, after which the entry of Jupiter, Saturn conjunction, the Mercury was knocking; joined and united only in the first degree of Aries. And, since God is joined to be followed with regard to whom a grievous mourning by the nature and the iniluen- tia good, and likewise I will describe him, holding the same office the court; Lord, viz Sunday. And because communion judgement drink that mortality is forward God for sins human race as was time of the flood, so mercury promotor senate heaven sets human crimes greater than times of the flood, and try instruments and scrolls, and written in heaven.
