Explosion hits Israeli-owned cargo ship in Gulf of Oman, no injuries

Maritime intelligence firm says very possible unexplained blast stemmed from ‘asymmetric activity by Iranian military’; ship identified as MV Helios Ray owned by Tel Aviv company

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — An explosion struck an Israeli-owned cargo ship sailing out of the Middle East on Friday, an unexplained blast renewing concerns about ship security amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran.

The crew and vessel were safe, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which is run by the British navy. The explosion forced the vessel to head to the nearest port.

A train crash in north of the city of Sohag in central Egypt killed at least 32 people and injured 66 others, health authorities said.

Dozens of ambulance vehicles were rushed to the scene of the crash, which took place in the southern province of Sohag, said a statement by Egypt’s heath ministry quoted by the Associated Press (AP).

It was not immediately what caused the crash close to the Nile-side town of Tahta, about 365 km (230 miles) south of Cairo. The public prosecutor's office said it had ordered an investigation.
