Afaik, Berlusconi's Mediaset company destroyed it by importing Hollywood films en masse into an Italy that loved its own cinema. Well the plus side is that nowadays it is possible for people to shoot a low budget film. Its not inconceivable for people with vision and talent to crowd fund good low budget films. There are even some big name actors who will do arthouse films just out of the interest so with a good script the odd big name could be reeled in This is really what french new wave cinema was doing by keeping things simple. In the 90's the Dogme school was running around with hand held cameras. Some of the most suspensful films often have small casts but the action is in the detail, not in the grand sweep like in a blockbuster

It is virtually impossible to get low budget films noticed by a larger audience because so many of them are made each year. Its a bit like jamming in a garage with 3 local bandmates and hoping that the recording will chart overseas. Unless its an absolute masterpiece, nobody notices your indie movie in a sea of hundreds of other indie movies.

I had a very short power cut today 10-15 mins. But it was strange. It 'pulsed'? My old analogue radio turned back on for a split second in regular intervals, every 30 seconds or so. Looking at the western power distribution site, this is happening across their coverage. Short localised interruptions of supply. Maybe a test of some kind? Up to now we have seen power outages in India, Italy (Vatican city specifically), Iran and now Cork in Ireland. However, the significance of the Irish connection, or the place named in the article, is actually the last port that the titanic visited before plunging to the depths of the ocean, in 1912. In 1913, the federal reserve act was enacted. Go figure. Edited January 14 by Morpheus
