UK bans free range chicken - true or false?

Many of the big UK supermarket chains are going down the road to only selling free range eggs so there is some doubt there.

Having hens outside and acting normally is a good way of improving their immunity to illnesses as long as there isn't three foot of snow on the ground and they aren't being forced to go out for eight hours a day when they don't want to.

In the east of England we have had recent bird flu outbreaks. The rule is chickens can go outside as long as penned in with a netting roof cover. I run a flock Max has the issue but not the whole answer. I’m sure the Avian flu is more of usual BS though...can’t be seen as able to care for ourselves.

During the bird flu a couple of years ago, chickens were kept in barns so supermarkets put a little sticker on their "free range" eggs saying somehing like "these eggs came from barned chickens". Presumably they will do the same again saying the chickens are barned "temporarily" but the flu will never go away.

Ok it's not as clear, but we need to know that they want to attack our chooks. I cannot have them without a netted cover,  even the fruit trees need nets otherwise the fox gets them during the day!! Strangely, they attack mainly chicken but not ducks. I think ducks are better converters of food anyway and they lay at least as well.
