She told him that, during her childhood in the USSR, 'People were jailed for inadvertently having their chips wrapped in a newspaper with Stalin's face on it.' Unlike those fans of Communism, Kisin comes from a family who know what it can lead to. His great-grandfather did ten years' hard labour in a Soviet gulag for criticising the Stalin regime. When his grandfather questioned the 1979 invasion of Afghanistan, not only was he ostracised, but so were his relatives — his son (Kisin's father) was thrown out of university. But it isn't only the politicians and officials who are at fault — it's the philosophy itself. 'Socialism's answer to poverty,' writes Kisin, 'is the equivalent of helping wheelchair users by cutting everyone else's legs off.' John F. Kennedy used to say of capitalism: 'A rising tide lifts all boats.' Kisin's verdict is that the free market 'has liberated more people from poverty than anything else, yet is portrayed as wholly exploitative'. Nathan Robinson, author of Why You Should Be A Socialist, says that 'the moral imperative is to place the economy under the control of the people'. Yet as Kisin points out, 'the truth is it already is . . . consumers assert their democratic power with every penny they spend'. And it isn't only in economics that Kisin thinks 'West is best'. There's the question of free speech, or as he calls it, 'the ultimate disinfectant for bad ideas'. His experience as a stand-up comic has shown him the threat this precious commodity is currently under. In 2018, having been booked for a gig at the University of London, Kisin was asked by student leaders to sign a contract forbidding him from making jokes relating to 'racism, sexism, classism, ageism, homophobia, biphobia, xenophobia, Islamophobia, anti-religion or anti-atheism' (we'll pass over the cumbersome wording). This Behavioural Agreement Form, they said, was to ensure that the event was a 'safe space'. Kisin admirably refused to sign. In the ensuing media dust-up, one Radio 4 listener called him a Nazi. 'I must be the only Jewish Nazi comedian in the world,' says Kisin. To achieve their longed-for offence, some modern audiences deliberately take jokes at face value. Kisin cites one instance 'when someone complained about a comedian making epilepsy-related jokes, despite the fact the comedian himself was epileptic and had made this fact abundantly clear.' One of the scariest sentences in the book describes the effect all this has had on comics themselves: 'The sad truth is, the vast majority of comedians are now funnier in green rooms and WhatsApp groups than they are on stage.' The problem is a recent one. 'When I first moved to the UK in the 1990s, hate crimes . . . didn't even exist. Now . . . the list is growing faster than Boris Johnson's child support bill.' Language is ever-changing — Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were both happy to use the term 'illegal alien', but now it has to be 'undocumented migrant'. This despite the fact that 'nobody actually thought Mexicans were crossing the Rio Grande in UFOs'. What's particularly worrying is that officialdom has started coming down on the side of the new orthodoxy. In 2019, a man who'd tweeted about transgender issues was visited by Humberside Police, one of whose officers said: 'I need to check your thinking.' Literally the 'thought police'. According to Keen, the complainant took issue with a segment in her “Thank you Marjorie Taylor Greene” video. In the segment, Keen read part of an article about Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene calling for children attending drag shows to be made illegal. She also read a section of the article that claimed “Greene is one of many conservatives to have recently railed against events like ‘Drag Queen Story Hour,’ while also saying that the LGBTQ community is attempting to ‘indoctrinate’ or ‘groom’ children.” After reading these parts of the article, Keen said she agreed with Greene’s stance and that children attending drag shows is “grotesque.” Keen added, “It is often sexualized and I think that’s because with some men, more than some women, there is a disconnect between what is appropriate and what is inappropriate in front of children.” Keen’s report of police visiting her over a YouTube video and recording it as a hate crime comes days after the UK’s College of Policing issued new guidance that told officers to focus on catching criminals instead of going after those that post social media content that’s deemed to be “offensive.” And in her video about the incident, Keen accused her local police of ignoring burglary, theft, and other crimes in the area. “I definitely know that there are people in this town, small town of mine, who will not have had any police response to being burgled or broken into or their bike being stolen or anti-social behavior,” Keen said. “There are people who go in local businesses and choose not to pay. The police don’t care about any of that but they’ll knock on my door.” The UK police have become infamous for investigating retweets, podcasts, and more and recording them as “non-crime hate incidents.” Over 120,000 non-crime incidents have been logged in the UK since 2014 but the UK Court of Appeals ruled that non-crime hate incidents were unlawful last year. She describes how officials in the Government Equalities Office tried to block her meeting with critics of the NHS clinic, including the LGB Alliance. Here’s how it begins: Government ministers have difficult decisions to make, often between options where the best course of action is unclear. Some decisions, however, are simple. They are about right and wrong. Last week’s decision to shut the Tavistock clinic is one such example. When I became equalities minister in early 2020, the NHS gender identity service (GIDS) for young people was presented to me by government officials as a positive medical provision to support children. I was assured that was there “nothing to see here”, if anything, the Tavistock was getting unfair press. This was despite whistleblowers like Dr David Bell already raising concerns about practices at the clinic. Children and their welfare should be a priority of any government. After receiving correspondence on the matter I decided to listen to every perspective on the issue of those experiencing gender distress to prepare future policy. I noticed officials seemed to be consulting the same people and previous ministers had created an LGBT advisory panel that was clearly suffering from groupthink. I insisted on meeting campaigners on both sides of the debate: not just Stonewall but, to the horror of some officials, the LGB Alliance. I met clinicians and, most importantly, I asked to meet young people who had used the Tavistock’s services. One such young person was Keira Bell. To my surprise, I was advised strongly and repeatedly by civil servants in the department that it would be “inappropriate” to speak to her. I overruled the advice. Along with other advisers across government I met Keira and listened to what she had to say. Her testimony was harrowing and brought many on the Zoom call to tears. The government machine wants to be comfortable and consensual and campaigners and activists know how to take advantage of this. A minister asking tricky questions can be stopped in their tracks by accusations of stoking “culture wars”. Minutes of private meetings with whistleblowers and concerned citizens can be selectively leaked or become the subject of numerous innocent-looking freedom of information requests, designed to identify targets for harassment on social media, as I discovered in one unfortunate case. Whitehall has solutions for ministers wishing to dodge difficult decisions: issue another call for evidence for information you already have; publish a consultation that is captured by campaigners or form a new working group of “stakeholders”. However, the work of government is all about making difficult decisions, even if it makes us unpopular. I write not to take credit for this result — my part in it was very minor — but to give an insight into the numerous obstacles that slow down even the most determined minister from finding out the truth and making the right decisions. Someone I know has PTSD......."aaaw so that's why she tries to get off with your husband when you go and put the kettle on, it's a shame".
