Relativity, centrifuge and deep space

Your on a space ship which generates artificial gravity using a centrifugal wheel rotating relative to a central shaft.

Will it be neccessary to rotate the wheel relative to space or just the shaft relative to the wheel in order to generate artificial gravity.

I can make the moon go faster than the speed of light by pirouetting like a ballerina. Does relativity break down with angular distances?

To the shaft. It is centrifugal force causing outward force it mimics gravity.

It should possible to rotate a shaft on earth and produce centrfugal forces on the housing then right?

You could just have  whats in effect the rim of a wheel and rotate that to create a centripital force. - See also IIRC The Icarus space craft

If you want 1G then your diamitor has to be quite large in order to keep below 2 rpm a which point spin becomes noticable .

2rpm is considered the tolerable limit for most people - theres some who can go higher but you are seriously limiting your pool of candidates.

On a space craft you would face the problem that accelleration / deceleration would create G force in the wrong direction* - If tyu were accelleating constantly / for a long time you may need to angle the rotating section to compensate. (and slow down by reversing)

*As it does on earth

You could aim a flat plane with the normal pointing up to the destination planet. Move the plane toward it accelerating at 1G then flip the plane midway and decelarate at 1G.

Yes - negating the need for a rotating section.

Upside smaller ship

Downside - 1) its not as viable for a generation ship owing to the need to flip (cows goat tractors bouncing etc).
