Kids Growing Up Today Are Really UNLUCKY!

HistoryIsComplex

Recommended Posts

Compared to the 1980s/1990s kids:

- Kids today are under 24/7 digital surveillance and data gathering

- The Data Gatherers SIT THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY IN SILICON VALLEY AND ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO HOLD TO ACCOUNT

- Kids are so phone/screen/technology addicted that 50% or so will be OBESE and unhealthy adults

- The Schoolyard Bully is EVERPRESENT now, thanks to the myriad Trolls and other Assholes who are Online daily

- There is growing evidence that PORN CONSUMPTION among youth is affecting their sexual/romantic behavior in VERY bad ways

- GROWN ADULTS are TRYING TO FORCE LGBTQ/GENDER CONFUSION CRAP ON TODAY'S KIDS

- Everything digital that kids buy - especially Computer Games - is locked down with DRM/mandatory cloud accounts

- They can't really trade computer game discs, music, films in the schoolyard like we used to

- Quality print magazines have largely given way to trashy Internet Blogs and such

- Popular Culture today is SHIT - DEVOID OF ARTISTIC TALENT, full of WEIRD AGENDAS AND MANIPULATION

- Music, Film and other arts have GONE TO SHIT as well. We had Fellini and Hitchcock. They have Michael Bay and Marvel Movies.

- By the time many of these kids get a career, AI WILL HAVE NUKED MANY ENTRY-LEVEL JOBS

Im happy that i could witness a world that had no computers, no mobile phones, no puplic internet, no social media and it was great, it was fantastic.

Its a gift to have witnessed such a world. I could not imagine growing up into this insanity, let alone going to school under all those restrictions.

A time where i still listend to music on a cassette, where i thought having a microphone is cool and meeting with friends without any interruption of some silly message that some no-name dude has just written on the phone because he was bored and needed it to share with everyone.

This world in the year 2020 and beyond isnt something where i would to want to live for too long. It breeds unhappiness, drives us further apart.

Although not everything is bad in some technology, the most of it is.

There was a time where i looked at children and was happy for them, as they would have a lot to look forward to. I cant say that anymore.

I think to myself: you will grow up in a world that is devoid of empathy for one another and everything is based on a shallow surface level relationship.

Its sad to see. Its an intresting time in as such, that humans were never this far away from spirit, never so much disconnected to their true heritage, always on the lookout to ease the pain in themself by sinking their time and attention into short pleassure and into self importance by sharing all of their moments online, leaving nothing to themself and seek the admiring of others to comfort their broken ego.

Im not looking foward anymore, as the future that is proposed to be our destination doesent intrest me.

Technology was going great until the SUITS/MBAs TOOK OVER RIGHT AFTER THE 9/11 ATTACKS.

In the Post-911 Era, TECHNOLOGY MANAGERS WERE APPOINTED WHO ARE NOT TECHNOLOGISTS/ENGINEERS - THEY ARE BUSINESS SCHOOL GRADUATE WHO JUST WANT TO MAKE MONEY.

A good technologist will try to EMPOWER YOUR LIFE, MAKE YOU MORE FREE, GIVE YOU GREAT, USEABLE TECH.

Today's Corporate Engineers HAVE TO BUILD WHAT MANAGEMENT TELLS THEM TO BUILD.

Most of it is BAD. Some of it is REALLY BAD.

DRM probably stands for "Destroy Rightful Messiah" to these people.

"Digital Rights Management" never sounded genuine to me.

Technology like this used to be called "Copy Protection".

Nobody knows where the fuck DRM came from.

My parents couldn't keep me in as a child, but they didn't worry where I was most of the time because the community looked out for each others children more. Obviously there was still crime, but it was still a higher trust society than it is now.

If I had children I wouldn't mind them gaming as long it was in moderation, I wouldn't want them wandering the streets anyway. Gaming might be the biggest entertainment industry now, but at least it's not a passive thing like vegetating in front of TV shows. I have met some great people from all over the world gaming online too that I have kept in touch with for years, that's pretty cool in my opinion. They're cracking down on free speech in online gaming though, so them interesting late night conversations with my gamer friends might be a thing of the past too in future.

Out of likes HistoryIsComplex; so true - and sad.

I’ll include the ‘50s, 60’s and 70’s.

Fab days of walking/cycling to school by ourselves, taking off for the whole day on weekends making our own adventures and so much more; just the freedom really.

Kids have been mollycoddled for a couple of decades now, hence this current generation of entitled namby pamby brain dead automatons.

I think it's 50/50. Tech has no doubt dumbed a lot of folks down, but gamergate also woke a lot of people up. I don't want to judge all youngsters like they're the same. Some are lost, but some are very awake. The awake ones have to keep their mouths shut in front of their peers though.

Your grandmother would probably have said much the same thing and these children today will be saying the same things in forty years time. I have no idea what the extent of video games have on the population but judging by some of the comments here, it seems quite prolific among adults as well as children which says something about our society.

You notice that to date you have four likes for your comment? This really pisses me off about the way we communicate. Even a simple five or six word sentence would be better than a click of a mouse to signify appreciation. This is real 'Karen of Facebook' stuff.

No one is going to respond to your comment bar three or four people here who are able to write coherently to a comment that is well written using the correct syntax, grammar and paragraphed appropriately.  Your on a loser there.

If you look at the main post by History Is Complex - the C&P post has some valid points but if that was me (and I suspect you), I would have taken each point and expanded upon or elongated them with some personal experience. The 'Everlasting Schoolyard Bully' and 'Music, Film, and Arts Have Gone to Shit' points alone were valid topics on their own worth commenting on as they have a huge impact on certain demographics. Instead, it's C&P'd as is and is either acknowledged with a dreaded 'like' or a one line comment with a link. There is no meeting and exploring of the minds which ironically is the generic overall theme with the points made being the reasons.

Imagine 4/5 people sitting round a table at home and someone starts conversing in the same fashion as what's written in main post while others just sit in silence giving a thumbs up or down or worse - producing their phone and telling you to go to a link?   We are a social species and computer exchanges will never compensate.

The absolute irony is the 9th point made where HOC says  'Quality print magazines have largely given way to trashy Internet Blogs and such'. It should include 'quality conversation and relationships.

Personally, I think 'gaming is wholly destructive. It shouldn't necessarily mean  that kids vegetate in front of a TV if not banging on a console. What about tennis, squash, ice hockey, football, rugby etc?

I'm not saying they should vegetate either. I'm just saying that a lot of older folks that talk down to gamers sat in front of the TV for most of their life or listened to subversive music.

People have been gaming for millennia. Obviously I would rather kids be outside and not getting obese.

Some games are very mindnumbing and repetitive, but others not so much. I don't see how stuff like this is a bad thing:

Surely stuff like Orwell gets people thinking? I think strategy games are pretty good too.

I rarely game these days, but one thing I have noticed over the years is that a lot of PC gamers seem to be way more based than console gamers, but unfortunately edgy Steam gamers are now in the crosshairs.

I get your frustration and know where it is comming from and i thank you for your reply and your words.

I think the paradox is that when you speak out against the way we communicate with one another in todays world and in the same time use these very devices that enabled such a thing, its unavodiable to run into some conflicting statements or behaviour.

A simple "like" transports two things: a) someone reads what i had to say (equivalent of your example with the people sitting arround the table and listen to someones talk) and b) in some way or other apprichiating it for saying it/sharing it.

Of course it doesent contribute to the continuation of a conversation as no new input has been made as you would have observed/experienced in a real life meeting, but it still holds the value of: "being listend to".

The second paradox is that we would not communicate with one another here, if not for this technology called internet and instead would resort to people we have close relations with and yes i rather have a good conversation in real life without the middleman in between, just like everyone did in the old days (there were no other options and it was good). But i also can aprrichiate being able to talk to you guys, not even knowing you personally.

I guess I get that! I think I expect too much here. I like reading about other people's way of dealing with things concerned with authoritarian and political matters. There will be another site somewhere no doubt but always the same problem persists. The trouble is shocking standards of literacy not just among mentally ill people who have their obvious problems but with your average person. I've led a very privileged life having been born and grown up in this particular era and over the past twenty years I've fucked with the heads of people who thought they were more powerful because they had a title 😜 .

I get so sick of all those posts containing videos  and links by people who are barely able to read and write.  There are  handful here who do appreciate a good fable and make good comments but I was hacked off this morning when I saw my last post had been removed to some obscure section of the forum as I thought it was worth a read. I guess I would.

Don't get me wrong, a lot of triple A games from major studios are poison. There are some great indie titles though.

A little bit of "history of game development" may be in order.

The people who made games on 8Bit and 16Bit "home computers" 25 years ago were a very different bunch from today.

Most were highly educated - Mathematics, Computing Science, Science degrees, Engineering degrees, true Geeks - and were out to MAKE INTELLIGENT GAMES.

They had to make games work on home computers with only 1 to 8 Mhz of CPU power, no 3D chip, and only 64Kb to 512Kb of RAM. Not even 1MB.

So they put tremendous ingenuity into writing clever code and designing new, intelligent game mechanics.

They didn't have today's WOW 3D GRAPHICS CAPABILITIES at their disposal so THEY INVENTED ONE CLEVER GAMEPLAY CONCEPT AFTER ANOTHER.

They TOOK CREATIVE AND INTELLECTUAL RISKS WITH THEIR GAMES - EVERY YEAR THERE WOULD BE AT LEAST 4 OR 5 GAMES THAT TRY SOMETHING COMPLETELY NEW.

The games back then ALSO WERE NOT GENRE-GAMES LIKE TODAY - i.e. FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER, RPG, RTS GAME AND SO FORTH.

What happened then is tragic - around the year 2000, BIG GAME PUBLISHERS LIKE ELECTRONIC ARTS BOUGHT UP ALL THE SMALL GAME DEVELOPERS AND DESTROYED THEM.

The CREATIVE DESIGN OF GAMES PASSED FROM "TRUE GEEKS WHO LOVE MAKING GOOD GAMES" TO "WALLSTREET COWBOYS WITH MBAs WHO LOVE MAKING PROFIT".

OUT WENT THE GAME DESIGN GENIUSES OF THE 1980s AND 1990s WHO TOOK CREATIVE RISKS AND DID SOMETHING NEW EACH YEAR.

IN CAME THE BUSINESS SUITS, WHO CAME UP WITH SHIT LIKE "CASUAL GAMES" AND "AAA GAMES" THAT COST 50 MILLION DOLLARS TO MAKE.

AND THIS CREATED GAMES THAT ARE DESIGNED TO ENGAGE AND ADDICT POINTLESSLY, RATHER THAN INTELECTUALLY CHALLENGE THE GAMER.

ALL BECAUSE WALL STREET MONEY AND GULF OIL MONEY WAS NOW FINANCING THE GAMES.

MANY OF THE MOST BRILLIANT NAMES IN GAME DESIGN - ROBERTS, MOLYNEUX, BRABEN - WERE ESSENTIALLY THROWN OUT OF THE INDUSTRY THEY CREATED.

SO INTELLIGENT AND INTELLECTUALY GAMES WENT INTO THE TOILET - BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THE PTB WANTED.

I ALSO SUSPECT THAT SMART GAMES WERE MAKING YOUTH TOO SMART - TPB DECIDED TO DUMB DOWN THE GAMES.

Yeah, we can't be having games that encourage pattern recognition and problem solving being popular. lol

For people that are interested in nostalgia regarding the good old days, I recommend this:

What strikes me with modern kids, they are the first generation without any identifiable youth cults.

They nearly all dress and look the same as their parents generation.. .

Clone sportswear, clone trainers, clone haircut, individuality is dead. Did you ever see a teenage goth in the last 5 years for example?
