Because of course the virus could be hiding in tripe.
Mitochondrial Eve
Apparently, according to social media, the list below has been released by a whistleblower. It outlines what is deemed essential and non-essential with pet care items (including toys presumably) being approved whilst many baby products and children's toys aren't. 1

Macnamara
The non essential items are patrick vallance, chris whitty, neil fergusson and the sage team who should be tried as criminals for their lies to the british people
alexa
Tesco shopper is charged with criminal damage and breaching coronavirus regulations after tearing away plastic sheets covering 'non-essential' items in Welsh supermarkets. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8875185/Moment-furious-Tesco-shopper-yells-rip-f-ers-tears-plastic-items-Wales.html +39 +39 Chris Noden went shopping in Newport, Gwent wearing just his boxer shorts and a face mask because 'clothes are non essential items' 1
Mitochondrial Eve
The Tesco Manager in this video, who tried to prevent this man from entering the store for not being appropriately dressed, eventually has to admit that clothes are essential. Edited to add: @alexaliterally just beat me to it (by a matter of seconds) with her pictures of this guy. - TZC -
Can anyone enlighten me of an official reason given for this? I don't have a tv. I was talking with family and mentioned this non essential item lark They thought it was a good idea that made sense. Why? Because then small businesses selling pots pans bins dvds etc whatever- can feel better knowing it's not only them that are affected. I asked, How does this help them? Surely it makes no difference if you're banned from opening? "They can get the trade later when they're allowed to open back up." I was stumped then. I mean, thoughts running around my mind.. "Shut and going bankrupt? Will they ever GET to open again? Will people not use the internet to buy these things before then and negate your reasoning?" But after being warned that 20 people have cv in my area I dropped it. It's a strange feeling when you love someone but think there's no hope for them, and it angers and brings bitterness that they can't SEE, and accept anything they're told. So yeah if anyone has heard of any reason please share.

Baby milk and tampons/sanitary towels sealed off in plastic. Disgraceful. It's humiliating that a woman could not buy sanitary protection. So was she expected to just stuff her knickers with wads of toilet roll then?! I'm really glad I had the menopause. One less thing to have to deal with!
