I have met him and I can assure you he is an addict in recovery, 20 odd years clean now. Years ago he set up a male-only 12 step program meeting which still runs every week, Wednesday evenings if I recall, and he brings along cakes he has baked. He hugged me when I told him that his book about his recovery helped me so much, a slightly awkward hug as he is so tall!
