Phones at a New Zealand medical research company have been “running hot” with Kiwis volunteering to be the first in the world to trial a new Covid-19 vaccine.
New Zealand Clinical Research (NZCR) started the first human clinical trials of the vaccine in Auckland on Friday, and is now seeking more volunteers in both Christchurch and Auckland.
The company announced on Wednesday it needs 100 healthy volunteers aged between 18 and 80 to test a vaccine called ReCOV. The vaccine has been developed by Jiangsu Rec-Biotechnology in China’s Jiangsu province
One of the latest vaccines in the fight against Covid-19 is being trialled in Nelson.
The European company Valneva SE has started a late-stage trial for its VLA2001 vaccine in New Zealand, at Lakeland Clinical Trials sites in Rotorua, Waikato, and Papamoa and at Southern Clinical Trials sites in Christchurch, Waitemata, Remuera, West Auckland and Nelson.
About 4000 people have already been part of a trial in Europe, and the UK Government has ordered 100 million doses.
The trial is open to unvaccinated New Zealanders who are aged 56 and over and are fit and healthy.
