The sun doesn't fully set during the height of summer in Antarctica for exactly the same reason it doesn't during the height of summer in the Arctic Circle. I've always had a bit of a fascination with Antarctica since I was young. One of the first books I downloaded and read when I first got my Kindle a few years ago now was "South" by Ernest Shackleton, describing his ill-fated attempt to cross the continent.

 

And that's why you don't get many 'tourists' just rocking up for a 'holiday'.

 

I think it is indeed possible that Antarctica was very different thousands of years ago, the poles have shifted before in the past, so Antarctica would have been on the equator. When the poles do shift, the ice caps would melt, which will be the cause of these 'Biblical floods' as the oceans rise, then new ice caps form at the 'new' poles, potentially quite rapidly too.

 

Who really knows what is buried under the ice and snow of Antarctica, us 'ordinary folk' will probably never know, perhaps the remnants of some ancient civilisation.
