HM Revenue & Customs will now have the power to take money directly from the bank accounts of those who haven't paid a tax bill, in a move a tax expert has called 'draconian'.

Banks and building societies will be required to pay the taxman directly from a debtor’s account, if they have repeatedly refused to pay a tax bill worth £1,000 or more. This includes funds held in cash Isas.

This recovery scheme, known as Direct Recovery of Debts or DRD, was launched in 2015, but was paused during the covid pandemic.

HMRC has officially relaunched it in what it calls a ‘test and learn’ phase after being given the power to do so by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the Spring Statement in March 2025.

Anyway, back to Israel/Palestine. Starmer seems to think he's helping along a two-state solution by recognising Palestine. If either side wants to be extreme within the confines of their own country that's up to them. The problems keep going in a tit-for-tat way between Israel & Palestine though, invading and/or occupying each other. There's a saying that good fences make good neighbours, but in their case they don't agree where the fences should be. Land disputes and turf wars are one of the main causes of wars all over the world.

I think Starmer is just trying to seem relevant.

I don't think there can be a state of Palestine when they want Israel destroyed.

It's kinda funny cos people accuse Jews of owning the world and the media. But all the media are strongly anti Israel and pro Palestine. I've spoken to Israelis and their accounts of atrocities and constant living in bombardment of rockets and living in fear is not pleasant. Although I think they've gone a bit OTT, I can understand their position.

It depends where your starting point is for a baseline. Many people who criticise Israel look back to WW1 and before, when Palestine was a single territory within the Ottoman empire, and the different ethnic groups living together in relative peace, bar the occasional uprising against their Ottoman occupiers.

The locals decide to support the British in WW1 to defeat the Ottomans, all the while the British govt has the Balfour declaration plan to set up a Jewish homeland and betray their hopes for independence and freedom. They get the League of Nations mandate when there is huge Jewish immigration allowed, changing the demographics and native Palestinians (Muslims & Christians) getting squeezed out.  Was that wrong? Many people think so, but supporters of Israel usually go on to say that it's all history which we can't change now. Besides, the holocaust is mentioned as another reason for the UN recognising Israel after WW2.

When the British leave in 1948 the Palestinians rejected the 1947 UN partition plan by going to war instead. We are now numerous wars and uprisings later which the Palestinians have all lost, together with progressively more land. Helped of course by American aid.

Not having Israel implies they start losing wars instead as they won't give up their country voluntarily. Who wants to fight Israel now?  It appears only such as Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran are serious about that.

Yes I can understand the history. But if we apply the same logic, then most of Europe could have justification for currently being at war, as the original borders of countries are vastly different to pre WW1. If we're going all the way back to ottoman empire, then most countries in Europe weren't even countries then. Should we return to Roman and Ottomans? When do we stop going backwards and start looking forwards?

Historical events do shape geography. And if you want peace you have to somehow accept it.

But the alternative to Israel seems to be an extremist Islamic state. Now considering extremist islamists want us dead and have tried to do so on many terrorist attacks, I personally prefer the state of Israel.

Thanks Mr H, I had missed this one on my stock market checks.  Looking at the Merval index over a 5 year period it appears to have been into bubble territory, yahoo tells me it rose 4,323% since Sept 2020 including this year's drop!   So the recent crash looks like a correction.

I don't know what caused this boom and bust - perhaps it's connected with the exchange rate with the $ US?

I suspect it has to do with inflation.

I get why people are standing up to this, but I just wish they had more discernment over who they put on these pedestals. Tommy Robinstein? Again it's herding people into support of israel, but doing it via xtianity which israel hates Jesus.

It's a massive turd clusterfuck and I agree with you, it's setting these people up and quashing further discussion/action on the issue as it gets even worse.

I guess it's all going nicely as planned 😐

You say it's herding people to support Israel. What evidence of this? As far as I can make out Israel is hated by the public. I haven't seen an uptick in their support since the demo.

Secondly what is wrong with Israel? And would the alternative to Israel be any better? Or actually worse that the current state of Israel?

  6. And correct me if I'm wrong but an issue here for folks is, are people being nudged and propagandized? Are there forces supporting this that will benefit?

The answer most likely in both cases is yes. But this is the same for most revolution, movements in history. Someone always benefits and people generally want an easy life and unless someone is knocking at the door, need to be nudged.

This does not deny the fact that the issues highlighted are very real...the only way to stop it is by a mass movement, which will not be perfect..

    Absolutely spot on.

I would as go as far to say 99% of these people banging on about us being a Christian nation, are not what you'd call Christian (church going, Bible reading/believing disciples)...

It's yet another label and narrative pushed by the media like GB News.

Ant Middleton's speech was nauseating. Tommy Robinson, Katie Hopkins, Ant Middleton arm in arm at the front of the rally with their followers hanging off their every word. Couldn't pick 3 bigger grifters and opportunists if you tried. 😂🤦

Probably a bit cheesy yes the speeches, but they always are at these things.

At least they gathered a million or however many people to gather to support English values. That's surely a good thing, or you think we shouldn't gather and show support? And show mass angst against the government?

In my view if you want to organize a mass demonstration you need an organizer. If you want a massive demo it needs to be a popular figure. If it's a popular figure they're not going to be squeeky clean and perfect. Spontaneous mass demos - not likely. To me it's a question do you want mass demos and mass eyes on these issues or not? Personally I'm slightly in the camp these issues should be highlighted. And although it wasn't a perfect demonstration, better than doing nothing?

Would be interested to know how many of Tommy's speakers/ guests at the rally support Isra el.? My holy spirit tells me, very few supporters of Zionism believe in Christianity. Quite the opposite. I'm not buying this Christian Revival one iota. It's fake bullshit.

    Remember, the gate is narrow.

I think you're right, maybe not church goers but most likely support the impact of Christian culture and values in this country

Where's there to escape? It seems to me all countries are run like that. Britain's bad enough but in many countries the theft and corruption is even more blatant than it is here. Maybe if you're fairly well off you can emigrate to a corrupt poor/third world country where your relative wealth can buy a high standard of living and exemption from some regulations and controls, but that's a double edged sword in itself.

Also, in living like that you are really only kidding yourself that things are better. Your experience as a "rich" foreigner in a poor country won't be the same as what most locals who live there experience, who have much the same life with the same problems that you escaped Britain from.

Some people point to Russia and China as our saviours, but they seem just the same, run by a corrupt and oppressive oligarchy. I'm long past thinking the grass is greener elsewhere, in my experience of travelling the common people have much the same complaints everywhere.

At least in Britain we don't have to put up with petty corruption in our day to day lives. Unlike in Morocco and South Africa, two countries where I've hired cars and been pulled over by corrupt police for spurious claims of "speeding" or non-compliance with some imaginary road law that the officer has just pulled out of his arse on several occasions and extorted for money because I'm a white foreigner, and the corrupt police will have just put these "fines" in their back pocket, and there's nothing I can do about it because I'm a white foreigner. At least we don't have to put up with that type of shit in Britain, not yet any way.

I think the main advantage of living abroad is that you can buy land and use it and it's not expensive and no planning regs. Land in UK is not affordable to most and heavily regulated. But yes if you're living a city lifestyle there's not much difference whever u go

  10. So I remember when I was really young. The natural way for boys to sort out issues was via violence. I can remember back to those times before I was made self conscious, and I remember violence flowing through my veins...

Then of course via teachers, parents, culture, you're taught as a man - NOT to be violent. You're meant to surpress it and talk about things

I have not been violent since those days.

The other day, my switch flicked after something happened. I could feel years and years of surpressed violence coursing through my veins....

I'm wondering if naturally we are these violent beasts, chimpanzees pretending to be civilized?

What is the repercussions if any, if true?

I'm wondering if all males are surpressing their violence so we can live nice cushy consumerist lives?

  11.

Two aliens landed in the Arizona desert near a gas station that was closed for the night.

They approached one of the gas pumps and the younger alien addressed it saying, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader."

The gas pump, of course, didn't respond.

The younger alien became angry at the lack of response.

The older alien said, "I'd calm down if I were you."

The younger alien ignored the warning and repeated his greeting. Again, there was no response.

Pissed at the pump's haughty attitude, he drew his ray gun and said gruffly, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader or I will fire!"

The older alien again warned his comrade saying, "You probably don't want to do that! I really think that will make him mad."

”Rubbish,” replied the young alien. He aimed his weapon and opened fire.

There was a huge explosion. A massive fireball roared towards him and blew the younger alien off his feet and threw him in a burnt, smoking mess about 200 yards away into a cactus patch.

Half an hour passed. When he finally regained consciousness, he refocused his three eyes, straightened his bent antenna and looked dazedly at the older, wiser alien who was standing over him shaking his big, green head.

"What a ferocious creature!" exclaimed the young, fried alien. "He damn near killed me! How did you know he was so dangerous?"

The older alien leaned over, placed a friendly feeler on his crispy friend and replied, "If there's one thing I've learned during my intergalactic travels, you never mess with a guy who can loop his penis over his shoulder twice and then stick it in his ear."
