HM Revenue & Customs will now have the power to take money directly from the bank accounts of those who haven't paid a tax bill, in a move a tax expert has called 'draconian'. Banks and building societies will be required to pay the taxman directly from a debtor’s account, if they have repeatedly refused to pay a tax bill worth £1,000 or more. This includes funds held in cash Isas. This recovery scheme, known as Direct Recovery of Debts or DRD, was launched in 2015, but was paused during the covid pandemic. HMRC has officially relaunched it in what it calls a ‘test and learn’ phase after being given the power to do so by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in the Spring Statement in March 2025.
  3. I think Starmer is just trying to seem relevant. I don't think there can be a state of Palestine when they want Israel destroyed. It's kinda funny cos people accuse Jews of owning the world and the media. But all the media are strongly anti Israel and pro Palestine. I've spoken to Israelis and their accounts of atrocities and constant living in bombardment of rockets and living in fear is not pleasant. Although I think they've gone a bit OTT, I can understand their position.
  4. Yes I can understand the history. But if we apply the same logic, then most of Europe could have justification for currently being at war, as the original borders of countries are vastly different to pre WW1. If we're going all the way back to ottoman empire, then most countries in Europe weren't even countries then. Should we return to Roman and Ottomans? When do we stop going backwards and start looking forwards? Historical events do shape geography. And if you want peace you have to somehow accept it. But the alternative to Israel seems to be an extremist Islamic state. Now considering extremist islamists want us dead and have tried to do so on many terrorist attacks, I personally prefer the state of Israel.
  5. I guess that settles that one then.........
  6. You say it's herding people to support Israel. What evidence of this? As far as I can make out Israel is hated by the public. I haven't seen an uptick in their support since the demo. Secondly what is wrong with Israel? And would the alternative to Israel be any better? Or actually worse that the current state of Israel?
  7. Argentina often cited as success story by right wing media is in real trouble
  8. And correct me if I'm wrong but an issue here for folks is, are people being nudged and propagandized? Are there forces supporting this that will benefit? The answer most likely in both cases is yes. But this is the same for most revolution, movements in history. Someone always benefits and people generally want an easy life and unless someone is knocking at the door, need to be nudged. This does not deny the fact that the issues highlighted are very real...the only way to stop it is by a mass movement, which will not be perfect..
  9. Probably a bit cheesy yes the speeches, but they always are at these things. At least they gathered a million or however many people to gather to support English values. That's surely a good thing, or you think we shouldn't gather and show support? And show mass angst against the government? In my view if you want to organize a mass demonstration you need an organizer. If you want a massive demo it needs to be a popular figure. If it's a popular figure they're not going to be squeeky clean and perfect. Spontaneous mass demos - not likely. To me it's a question do you want mass demos and mass eyes on these issues or not? Personally I'm slightly in the camp these issues should be highlighted. And although it wasn't a perfect demonstration, better than doing nothing?
  10. I think you're right, maybe not church goers but most likely support the impact of Christian culture and values in this country
  11. I think the main advantage of living abroad is that you can buy land and use it and it's not expensive and no planning regs. Land in UK is not affordable to most and heavily regulated. But yes if you're living a city lifestyle there's not much difference whever u go
  12. Did anyone attend the rally? What was it like?
  13. So I remember when I was really young. The natural way for boys to sort out issues was via violence. I can remember back to those times before I was made self conscious, and I remember violence flowing through my veins... Then of course via teachers, parents, culture, you're taught as a man - NOT to be violent. You're meant to surpress it and talk about things I have not been violent since those days. The other day, my switch flicked after something happened. I could feel years and years of surpressed violence coursing through my veins.... I'm wondering if naturally we are these violent beasts, chimpanzees pretending to be civilized? What is the repercussions if any, if true? I'm wondering if all males are surpressing their violence so we can live nice cushy consumerist lives?

    A HUMOUR THREAD

Two aliens landed in the Arizona desert near a gas station that was closed for the night. They approached one of the gas pumps and the younger alien addressed it saying, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader." The gas pump, of course, didn't respond. The younger alien became angry at the lack of response. The older alien said, "I'd calm down if I were you." The younger alien ignored the warning and repeated his greeting. Again, there was no response. Pissed at the pump's haughty attitude, he drew his ray gun and said gruffly, "Greetings, Earthling. We come in peace. Take us to your leader or I will fire!" The older alien again warned his comrade saying, "You probably don't want to do that! I really think that will make him mad." ”Rubbish,” replied the young alien. He aimed his weapon and opened fire. There was a huge explosion. A massive fireball roared towards him and blew the younger alien off his feet and threw him in a burnt, smoking mess about 200 yards away into a cactus patch. Half an hour passed. When he finally regained consciousness, he refocused his three eyes, straightened his bent antenna and looked dazedly at the older, wiser alien who was standing over him shaking his big, green head. "What a ferocious creature!" exclaimed the young, fried alien. "He damn near killed me! How did you know he was so dangerous?" The older alien leaned over, placed a friendly feeler on his crispy friend and replied, "If there's one thing I've learned during my intergalactic travels, you never mess with a guy who can loop his penis over his shoulder twice and then stick it in his ear."
  15. Hmm so house prices measured in gold suggests it's a really cheap time to buy a house. Contrary to main street thinking who think housing is expensive... I think we just got a lot poorer
