The BBC only made 2 of the books into a TV show, and not the last one where they destroy the 'domes' (don't want to wake the sheeple up). Or the prequel where the Aliens use television to initially brainwash the humans. Also the tripod machines were actually controlled by humans not by the aliens. The aliens could not live outside of the dome. This is the 'order following' theme, that we are living through now. Yes. I use software such as Flight Radar and see the aircraft you talking about, though they do not always show - in particular fast jets. A lot of AWACS and electronic surveillance aircraft up as well - very interesting flight patterns, in particular over Scotland. I have seen a lot of aircraft up north that normally I wouldn't see including Ospreys and Hercules flying in pairs earlier morning.
