  1. Television, The Drug Of A Nation

The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - 1992

    One nation
    Under God
    Has turned into
    One nation under the influence
    Of one drug

Television, the drug of the Nation
    Breeding ignorance and feeding radiation
    (2x)

    TV, it satellite links
    Our United States of Unconsciousness
    Apathetic therapeutic and extremely addictive
    The methadone metronome pumping out
    150 channels 24 hours a day
You can flip through all of them
And still there's nothing worth watching

    TV, is the reason why
less than 10 per cent of our nation
    Reads books daily
Why most people think Central America
    Means Kansas
    Socialism means unamerican
And Apartheid is a new headache remedy

Absorbed in it's world it's so hard to find us
It shapes our mind the most
Maybe the mother of our Nation
    Should remind us
That we're sitting too close to the...

    TV, is the stomping ground
    For political candidates
    Where bears in the woods
    Are chased by Grecian Formula'd
    Bald eagles

    TV, is mechanized politics
    Remote control over the masses
    Co-sponsored by environmentally safe gases
    Watch for the PBS special

It's the perpetuation of the two party system
Where image takes precedence over wisdom
Where sound bite politics are served to
    The fastfood culture

Where straight teeth in your mouth
Are more important than the words
    That come out of it
Race baiting is the way to get selected
    Willie Horton or
Will he not get elected on...

TV, Is it the reflector or the director?
Does it imitate us or do we imitate it
Because a child watches 1500 murders
    Before he's twelve years old
And then we wonder why we've created
A Jason generation that learns to laugh
Rather than to abhor the horror

    TV, is the place where
    Armchair generals and quarterbacks
    Can experience first hand
    The excitement of video warfare
As the theme song is sung in the background
Sugar sweet sitcoms that leave us
    With a bad actor taste
    While pop stars metamorphosize
    Into soda pop stars
    You saw the video
    You heard the soundtrack
Well now go buy the soft drink
Well, the only cola that I support
Would be a union C.O.L.A. (Cost Of Living Allowance)
    On...

    Back again, "New and improved"
We return to our irregularly programmed schedule
    Hidden cleverly between heavy breasted
    Beer and car commercials

    CNNESPNABCBCBTNT but mostly BS
    Where oxymoronic language like
    "Virtually spotless"
    "Fresh frozen"
    "Fight yet filling"
    and
    "Military intelligence"
    Have become standard

TV, is the place where phrases are redefined
    Like "recession" to "necessary downturn"
"Crude oil" on a beach to "mousse"
    "Civilian death" to "collateral damages"
And being killed by your own Army
    Is now called "friendly fire"

TV is the place where the pursuit
Of happiness has become the pursuit of trivia
Where toothpaste and cars have become Sex objects
Where imagination is sucked out of children
    By a cathode ray nipple
TV is the only wet nurse
    That would create a cripple

Hello. New to the forum, although, my band mates and me have been long time lurkers of the forum.

While going outside one day, I was taken aback by the amount of people I saw wearing masks.

I even saw a young lady in a car, by herself, windows rolled up, wearing a face mask and gloves.

It was kinda funny at first, but eventually it made me rather upset. So, I went home and wrote this song.

    Thanks for listening.

I've given it a few listens, and I like it. ?

    Ain't nobody going out today
    Ain't nobody wanna play
Ain't nobody out on the street
Ain't nobody left on their feet
They got you shaking, in your boots...

    Propaganda, all day long
They keep singing the same old song
    ??? like it now??
Make it look like some kinda clown
They got you shaking, in your boots...

Which way to be a man or mouse
Hide and chill inside your house
Or take a stand and go outside
Grow a pair and show some pride
They got you shaking, in your boots...

(didn't quite get the lyric in the second verse hence the ???)

  3. Reel by Reel - XTC  (1979)

    In this secret time

    Invading on our privacy
    Unknowing we mime

    We play for the ministry

They can film you in bed
Or when you take a bath
    They can tape every cry
    They can tape every laugh
They can turn you around so you won't know what's...

    Real by reel
Busy little bees recording everything you feel
    On reel by reel
    You're documented down like rats
    They're catching on every squeal
    On reel by reel
Reel by reel by reel by
Reel by reel by reel by

    In this hidden time

Ignorance may help you to cope
    Rehearsing for crime

And sex just in government cinemascope

They can film you at work
Or when THEY let you play
They can tape what you think
They can tape what you say
They can blur your I.D. so you won't know what's...

    Real by reel
They're busy little bees recording everything you feel
    On reel by reel
    You're documented down like rats
    They're catching on every squeal
    On reel by reel
Real by reel by reel by
Reel by reel by reel by

Now I lay me down to sleep
    Knowing that your lenses peep
And now I eat my daily bread
And into the tape spool I'll be fed

    <Guitar Solo>

They can film you in bed
Or when you take a bath
    They can tape every cry
    They can tape every laugh
They can turn you around so you won't know what's...

    Real by reel
They're busy little bees recording everything you feel
    On real by reel
    You're documented down like rats
They're catching up on every squeal
    On reel by reel
Reel by reel by reel by
Reel by reel by reel by
Reel by reel by reel by
Reel by reel by reel byyyyy...
