I have a bearded dragon. He actively tries to get closer to raised voices as if he is absorbing the emotion for instance me and the misses are disagreeing or even some shouting on the TV he will get as close as he can to the situation. The other day we had a visitor a cleaner who comes to do an hour a week free cleaning linked to a disability in the house. Anyway the cleaner was scared of the lizard and distanced herself because she was scared. The lizard was on his morning out from the enclosure and sensing the fear he ran towards the visitor across the floor faster than I've seen him run before as if the fear was nourishment for him. When she came back next week we kept him in and he clearly remembered her and spent the hour banging the window his reminder it's time to come out A micro anecdote to the larger picture but in relation to your question If you know what an opponent wants/needs the to beat them you need to deprive them of what they want from you.
