The mechanism is fairly well understood as soon as you get past the first couple of trillonths of a second There is an increasing amount of research that our brains and therefore our consciousness is quantum in nature, our brain are likely to be quantum computers

He has managed to work a could and a may in to his explanation, There is a scientific thought experiment known as the Boltzmann brain where by random fluctuations of particles that evolve over time cause a fully functional brain to come into existence. That just sounds like word salad and I've sat through lectures on quantum mechanics that make more sense, I suspect he is just making stuff up, that isn't to say he isn't correct, just he has no idea how it is supposed to work if he is correct

It's less the size of the computer so much as the size of the hard drive that's the issue. It's only pushing science a wee bit to say the universe is a computer, it's corresponds very well to information theory, don't think of it as elementary particles, just bytes of information and it makes more sense. So how big are nature's computers ?, universe sized.! But you confuse me ! I thought simulation was simulation by more advanced beings not nature making computers ?

There is absolutely no reason to suspect that the universe is a computer simulation other than IF it was indeed possible to do so( which it probably isn't), there is a greater chance that we live in a simulation than the real universe. Here is a question for you, how big a computer would you need to contain all the information in the visible universe ? The answer strangely enough is exactly the same size as the visible universe. That's hard to fit in a laptop
