I don't have any experience with video editing, but you should edit your files as close to RAW and then output compressed file to upload. Youtube is going to re-encode it again of course. You probably uploaded 30 min HD video with high bit-rate and that's most likely why it's 3gb in size. Re-encoded youtube version shows slightly less than 500mb.
