  1. The Hawaiian island of Maui has gone up in flames. I spent my honeymoon there and it really is a beautiful place. Reports in the Guardian are saying that explosions were heard but that could mean anything as sugar is produced there and that's pretty flammable stuff. They are blaming this on high winds far out in the Pacific fanning the flames, which may be true but there are just too many of these fires now around the world. Something is amiss, https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/aug/10/lahaina-maui-wildfire-damage
  2. It's a shame, especially after David spent all that money on a polo pony.
  3. One story that really bothered me this week is the news that the Beckhams and the Sussexes have fallen out. It seems their friendship is beyond repair. How sumply dreadful it must be to have a life-long friend turn his back when need is greatest. I can only hope that David, Harry, Meghan and Posh shake hands, make up, and start going to each others' parties again. https://www.thesun.co.uk/fabulous/23247559/david-victoria-beckham-harry-meghan-friendship-over/
  4. He has a criminal record now with all the baggage that entails. He didn't physically assault Hancock but made him feel uncomfortable by accusing him of the crimes he is responsible for. But, these days, hurting someone's feelings and making them feel uncomfortable carries a prison sentence. How absurd.
  5. The BBC was always preachy and loved to wag a finger at the moral shortcomings of the British public. It wasn't known as 'Aunty' for nothing.
  6. One thing to be deduced from all this, aliens are crappy pilots. I mean, they can fly a technologically superior ship from who knows where, through wormholes, portals, at speeds faster than light, then they hit earth's atmosphere and their skills amount to those of the average pisshead driving his BMW with a skinful of ale on a Saturday night at closing time.
  7. There's a lot of this about. This one from Israel where another unsafe conviction is thrown out, but not after a man serves a lengthy prison term. https://www.timesofisrael.com/man-convicted-of-brutal-murder-of-teen-girl-acquitted-in-retrial-after-16-years/
  8. Didn't the men wrongfully imprisoned for the murder of Carl Bridgewater lose 25% of their compensation? If memory serves, it went to the House of Lords which upheld the deduction.
  9. The ad is illiterate. Mate is spelled with one a. What am I missing here?
  10. For board and lodging... This poor sod was banged up in 2003 for a rape he did not commit. DNA evidence has exonerated him. If he sues and wins compensation, it is common for the state to claw money back to pay the cost of putting the man up for all those years. It beggars belief. https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/andrew-malkinson-17-years-jail-27404232
  11. Where I live, a couple of hawks took up residence and the squirrel and pigeon population is noticeably smaller. The other day I was picking some basil in the garden when a squirrel landed on the ground with a thump, closely followed by a hawk. The squirrel just managed to get away but the same bird snatched one off a tree trunk a few minutes later.
  12. Well that would logically follow. However, the set designers and associated trades are all pretty much unionized so you'd think there would be some solidarity there.
  13. Resting. It's called resting darling...
  14. But just think of all those tourists. The royals pay for themselves blah blah blah. Those were arguments for keeping the royals on; well that and the fact that Britain couldn't produce anyone capable of leading a republic.
  15. Ah, right. We used to call those 'jack knives' because they were used by sailors. Mine has a sheepsfoot blade with a can opener. Pretty basic but that's all we needed. Made in Sheffield and not a bit of rust on it. I did buy a Swiss Army knife many years later but the old penknife is still going strong.
  16. It's absurd. I grew up in the UK but I honestly can't remember knives being a thing. Every lad had a penknife or a sheath knife (if you were a scout) and I don't know anyone who was stabbed or slashed.
  17. There's a lot of truth in that statement. A rolled-up newspaper, a matchbox, a bunch of keys, a bootlace, all can be turned into a lethal weapon in the right hands.
  18. I suspect the coppers that see that video are indulging in a bit of wishful thinking. He's probably going to end up charged with GBH.
  19. Just Stop Oil blockaded a road and caused a minor accident. However, the driver and his pregnant girlfriend were inside. See what happens...
