This an interesting exert from the last interview with Hutchence, 7 days prior to his death

I too felt like you. I couldn’t understand why geldof was so hated when he at least was trying to help.

Then I read about why people were feeling this anger towards him. To cut it short and to the point, there were some really powerful movements making good points about the arms trade and fair trade and third world debt and they were making some headway with the demonstrations and protests and bringing the spotlight on mainly arms trade issues –

then along came geldof, jumped on that bandwagon, snatched the microphone from those with the powerful message, and started his own message which missed all the main points, and just scuppered what could have been a real victory for fairness.

Live8 on the other hand was not about getting people's money. It was about raising awareness for debt in African nations to be wiped.
It is possible that Geldof is just not that bright and is not aware of what's really going on.

Thing what I don't like about Geldof and all the other celebrity low-lives bleeding there hearts over africa is that the odds of changing the situation in africa are heavily stacked against them/us for numerous reasons.

They take the easy and fraudulant way of tackling human suffering by jumping on a private jet half way round the world and saying something must be done for afrcia, but neglect the fact that they probably have illegal mexicans working for less than minimum wage cleaning there million dollar mansions and they could change that immediately.

The day I'll have any respect for them is when I see them walk down there local crack infested ghetto and say something must be done about the poverty on there own doorstep. As someone who spent their childhood in the 70's and early adulthood in the 80's I would say that this is wrong.

Africa had many examples of corrupt dictators in the 70's and 80s. The African Continent was a political football in the cold war with the west and the east competing to install their favourites in power, regardless of the cost to the African people.

I could start with Idi Amin, probably the most notorious man of the 70's, perhaps alongside Pol Pot.

Add in Zaire, which was a nightmare in the 70's as different rebel groups were funded to compete for the natural resources, not much changed there.

South Africa of course. And the conflicts with the surrounding states, Angola, Mozambique supported by Russia and Cuba.

Somalia was always in and out of the news. And Eritrea. And Ethiopia itself of course.

Libya. Say no more.

In the early 1980's the dictator in the Ivory Coast started work on what was to become the biggest cathedral in the world (I think). Massive anyway. Hundreds of millions of dollars for a cathedral surrounded by slums.

The list goes on and on and on.

And it was news even then. I'm sure that there were countless reports on African corruption...

Which in nearly every case had external sponsors, ex-colonial powers, Americans, Russians, multinationals...

The only difference now is that the Chinese have joined in.
