Official : 99 percent of parents are letting down their children when sending them off to school with a packed lunch. Why on EARTH do we listen to these control freaks? MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS , Food Nazis lol.

Just one per cent of the food in primary school pupils' packed lunches meets the Government's nutritional standards for healthy school dinners, according to a Yorkshire university.

A study published today shows only one-in-five lunch boxes of eight- and nine-year-old pupils contains any vegetables, while more than three quarters include foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar, such as crisps, sweets and biscuits.

Leeds University academics analysed the content of the packed lunches of around 1,300 children from 89 schools across the UK.

School lunches must contain protein-rich and low-fat starchy foods, vegetables, fruit and dairy products. Meals cannot include sweets, savoury snacks or artificially sweetened drinks.

Leeds University researchers say just 1.1 per cent of the packed lunches they assessed meets these standards.

Around half of the country's school children opt for a packed lunch – around 5.5bn meals every year.

Professor Janet Cade, head of the Nutritional Epidemiology Group at Leeds said: "The poor quality of these meals could have serious implications for levels of childhood obesity and its long-term consequences."

So now we now know that Jamie Oliver WAS playing his part in the agenda (without him actually knowing it IMO). I DID actually wonder why the PTB let Jamie Oliver improve school dinners. I am taking a wild guess that he was ASKED by Gordon Brown to do it, and he obliged cos he thought that it was being done for a good reason. Dont get me wrong, I do know that school dinners DID need improving, but I wouldnt trust the PTB with the kid's food.

I think that I now know what the "5 per day" fruit thing is all about. Once we mentally accept that 5 fruits per day is "the norm", then the Lunchbox Supervisors can point accusing fingers at parents.

Forcing a child (or ANYONE) to have 5 items of fruit per day is gonna cause kids/people to resent fruit. It's way too much to expect anyone to eat each day. I would go as far as saying that it may be actually bad for your health, and the kid would not be able to stomach it.

When I first saw this on the tv news I thought Problem, Reaction, Solution. Every child must now be fed approved school meals and any parent that refuses will be EVIL!!!

But then I remembered that kids are kids and will just go to the shops at lunch time like I used to.

While I do agree with you, it is 5 portions of different coloured fruit & veg, and the portions are actually quite small, like one floret of broccoli is one, a tablespoon of peas is another, a small 150ml glass of juice another, 4-5 strawberries is another, a wedge of lemon another etc....

Leeds University researchers have utilised data provided by Sodexo, the French catering company, in their studies. Sodexo have had an influential input into similar studies in other parts of the world. Further information on this company can be found within another thread on this forum.

Title of thread: Probably the biggest company in the world that you've never heard of

Also it is three not five portions of fruit/veg for a child as the minimum each day. Its why the fruit juice carton is called five alive. As that was the recommended amount for an adult, on the healthy eatting pyramid sheet, we was given at school.

Coincidence maybe but... ...in 2006 I was a student at that uni and one of the end of module tasks was to make a marketing campaign for the 5 a day people.

The symbol of the uni is an obelisk shaped tower and the symbol of Leeds is an owl. They have golden owls in "Millennium Square" *spooky music*
