UK defence minister's niece 'confessed to murder'
Jessica Davies
Jessica Davies told police who found her that she was a "monster"
The niece of UK junior defence minister Quentin Davies told police she was a "monster" after confessing to a drunken knife murder, a French court has heard.
"I just wanted to cut him a little but the knife went in by itself," Jessica Davies, 30, told police, who came after her emergency call on 11 November 2007.
Police found her trying to stem the flow of blood from the body of Olivier Mugnier, 24, the court heard.
Her trial is expected to last two days, AFP news agency reported.
'I am a monster'
The court was told police had found her kneeling naked on the bed of her flat in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, near Paris.
The defence minister's niece told police: "I did it. I can't tell you why, but I did it... I am a monster."
I don't remember killing Olivier, but I take responsibility for killing him
Jessica Davies
Ms Davies told the court she had blacked out and had no recollection of the killing except "the sensation of the knife going in."
She said: "I am horrified by what I have done.
"I remember telling the police [who arrived at the murder scene] that I was a monster.
"I don't remember killing Olivier, but I take responsibility for killing him."
Mr Mugnier died after police arrived. He had been stabbed twice in the upper chest. The fatal blow touched his spine.
The court was told Ms Davies had met Mr Mugnier in an Irish pub and taken him to her flat.
Suicide attempts
Police said she was four times over the drink-drive limit and could barely stand or speak when they arrested her.
She talked in court about drinking during her teenage and student years, a previous cocaine habit and her two suicide attempts.
The judges heard she was depressed after splitting up with her French boyfriend.
The court heard that the knife that killed Mugnier was the one she had used to slash her own wrists and legs in her bathtub just a few months earlier following the break up.
Ms Davies was born in London to a British father and a French mother and grew up mostly in France.
She faces a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison if convicted of voluntary homicide without premeditation.
