Question about American HIGH SCHOOL and leaving

This question has bugged me for a very long time.

What age do kids in America leave school?

I ask this because silly Hollywood films fill the 'classroom' up with people who look in the mid 20's and early 30's!!

Is this another blatant distortion of fact or do kids just look older in America? :o

Hello, brotherapostate,

By law, public schools must accept students until they are 21 years old. After that, the schools no longer have to take them.

However, this is a very rare case and I have never seen anyone go past 19 years old.

This is just my experience here in Texas. I am also a high school English teacher--LOL

I just have trouble figuring out how old kids look on these movies. To me they look way older than 21. Perhaps in the UK kids just look younger. I know I did:p

The actors playing these roles probably are much older than the teenagers they are portraying.

You're right it's a common thing with TV and movies, we have a soap opera in the UK, the actress who's 19 played the roll of a 15 years old school girl.....there are many more examples, but can't think at the moment.

You leave highschool at 16 in the UK, then it's college and University after that for some.

myself i left at 16 and wen't on a work experience training scheme 4 days one day at college, and had two evening part time jobs also.

Yes, I hate to use Coronation Street as an example in anything but Gail Platts daughter is actually 25.

Anyhow, this has been a common theme in American high school moooovies for years. The kids look at least 25.

:eek: 25 o my ......Yes I used to watch films and think these guys look like men and thought there was something wrong with me lol for looking like a child, thought i was under developed or something.

I chatted to an American woman who thought that the English girls always looked older than their age, I disagreed, but this was about real life not Tv.
