Mystery illness strikes after meteorite hits Peruvian village

Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said today.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odour", local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalised, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene where the meteorite had left a crater 30m wide and six metres deep, said local official Marco Limache.

"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.

Peru - 'Meteor' Crash Leaves Crater 30 Meters In Diameter

An unidentified luminous object fell from the sky, leaving a hole six meters deep by 30 meters in diameter in the community of Carancas on the Bolivian border, according to the Puno based Direccion Territorial Policial (Dirtepol).

The alleged meteorite alarmed local residents. The community is located in the Desaguadero district of the Province of Chucuito.

At 23:45 hours yesterday, residents heard a stentorean noise that they believed was produced by an airplane, according to police sources. They then witnessed the impact of a luminous object in flames, which resulted in a loud explosion, according to the Agencia Andina news agency.

Remains of an unknown calcinated mass were found at the impact site. As it occurred in an unpopulated area, the incident did not affect any local residents. However, after the strange object gave off bits of lead and silver as it fell to earth, and the peasantry is worried that some illness may come about, according to RPP Noticias. Police and curiosity-seekers reported to the site.

Puno: Seven Policemen Become Ill After Gathering Meteor Samples

Puno, Sept. 17 (Agencia Andina) - Seven policemen took ill after collecting samples from the area where the alleged meteorite crashed in the community of Carancas (Puno) according to regional health director Jorge Lopez Tejada. He explained that the officers showed symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and dizziness and were sent to the Desaguadero Hospital and then to the Hospital de Sanidad de la Policia in Puno.

They were given oxygen and rehydration at Desaguadero, and were transferred to the other hospital after being stabilized, according to RPP Noticias.

[Tejada] also noted that a strong odor emanates from the impact site and which is not native to the area. This has caused commotion among settlers.

"Our cleanup crew has already reached the area and says that there is a hole filled with water. The odor is strong and (would be) affecting neighboring communities. There are some 500 families nearby and symptoms of nausea, vomiting, headache and body aches," he remarked.

He added that the has recommended that police authorities and the regional government should form a perimeter to keep people from coming near the site. He repeated that a medical brigade will set out from Puno and Julí tomorrow to perform the corresponding tests upon the locals.

Lopez Tejada called upon the authorities in Lima to send out a special brigade equipped with suitable equipment to gather samples from the alleged meteor more efficiently, as his office lacks such facilities.

He explained that according to the settlers, the object fell on midday Saturday and the hole it left behind has an estimated depth of five meters and a width of 15 meters.

This incident has been considered by the locals as a bad omen.

Heard that HAARP could make comets come to the earth. Then there was the G.I.Joe episode where it happened, Austin Powers Goldmember where it happened, and I also recall seeing some articles about it. Then there was this commerCIAl for a car where a rock band plays and the lead guitarist's guitar caused a comet to come to earth. Right in our faces I would assume. We would have known weeks before it happened, don't you think with NASA and all of it's gadgets. Or maybe not?

Over 100 Peruvians Sickened By Meteorite Vapors

http://img39.picoodle.com/img/img39/9/9/19/f_wwwreuterscm_8731b78.jpg

Dozens of people living in a Peruvian town near Lake Titicaca reported vomiting and headaches after they went to look at a crater apparently left by a meteorite that crashed down over the weekend, health officials said on Tuesday.

After hearing a loud noise, people went to see what had happened and found a crater 65 feet wide and 22 feet deep on an uninhabited plateau near Carancas in the Puno region.

Experts from Peru's Geophysical Institute are on their way to the area 800 miles south of Lima to verify whether it was a meteorite.

"We've examined about 100 people who got near to the meteorite crater who have vomiting and headaches because of gasses coming out of there," Jorge Lopez, health director in Puno, told Reuters.

"People are scared," he said.

Lopez said people went to the site after hearing a crash that they thought might be an airplane.

"We ourselves went near the crater and now we've got irritated throats and itching noses," Lopez said.

The site is near the border with Bolivia and experts from San Andres university in La Paz said initial analyses of sand samples from the crater showed that it could be a meteorite, according to newspaper reports.

Luisa Macedo, a geologist with the Mining Geology and Metallurgy Institute in Lima, told Reuters the reaction between the elements in a meteorite and the Earth's surface can generate gases that then dissipate.

Meteorites fell in 2002 and 2004 in the Andean area of Arequipa in southern Peru, Hernando Tavera, head of the Peruvian Geophysical Institute, told Reuters.

The day before I read the (apparent) meteorite incident in Peru, I read that Yale University has agreed to return thousands of ancient Peruvian artifacts that had been stolen from Machu Picchu.

Hiram Bingham III was the guy who first stole the artifacts. Guess what year. 1911.

According to Wikipedia Hiram Bingham III has been cited as one possible basis for the Indiana Jones character.

Perhaps everything is linked, and its up to us to find the connections. Perhaps The meteorite is a US Haarp retaliation to the Peruvian request to return the artifacts.

My thoughts entirely Pedsi. Whatever the media says, think the opposite. That way I am far more likely to find the truth.

Has anyone hear ever heard of symptoms of illness from a meteorite falling? The only symptoms from a meteorite falling that I know of, is if it falls on your head.

I certainly don't attribute this to anything dealing with man. If H.A.A.R.P. was that awesome..... why not create a meteor shower over Iran's nuclear reactors?

Have anyone wondered WHERE is the debris?? It looks like a dug-out hole. It's as mysteroous as 9/11 without an object that CAUSED the hole.

This hole thing about people getting sick after a meteor crash is similiar to the movie Invasion where people start getting sick everywhere and eventually enjoy the infection that is an alien virus which reprograms the brain to infect others as well.

What a 'coincidence.'

Since the original report, it is now being reported that the samples were examined in Lima, and that scientists say it was a rare kind of meteorite.

Also read this, http://www.rutlandherald.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070921/NEWS04/709210329/-1/RSS10

Peter Schultz, a meteor crater specialist at Brown University who is eager to visit the Peruvian site, said the latest details suggest this might be an unusual type of meteor strike, and that given the crater's size, the original meteoroid had to have been at least 10 feet in diameter before breaking up.

So first its rare to have a meteorite fall to Earth at all, and secondly its a rare type of meteor that hit on this occasion.

An image would be appreciated.

10 feet is near twice an average man's hieght. That hole is enormously larger than 10 feet. Plus when it was falling through the sky some thought it was an airplane which clearly has an impression an object 10 feet wouldn't give.
Look at the hole.

I think the "scientists" are telling porkies about meteorites and them hitting the earth being rare, or they haven't been paying attention:

Has anyone come across the theory of the Electric Universe? Apparantly a lot of craters are created by immensely powerful Lightning Bolts, where the connection between the Earth and some electrical force 'short circuit' and create a gigantic electric bolt!!

Studies have been carried out on these craters only to discover that the blast radius and layout of the rocks indicated it happened from the 'ground up' and not the other way round...

... so if it IS a meteor then i'd be interested to see what kind... if it's a meteor at all that is...!!

Speaking of 'superman'.....

Police probe 'Superman' sighting

Police are investigating after villagers in Romania claimed to see a Superman-like figure flying through the sky.

Almost 20 villagers, from Gemeni, Mehedinti county, claim the UFO was wearing a shiny blue suit, just like Superman's.

Police officers took written statements from all of the witnesses and say they described the figure in the same way.

Local policeman Ion Anuta said: "We talked to people of different ages who are all reliable citizens in our village.

"They all said they saw this strange creature who flew over their houses in his shiny blue costume. We'll just have to see what happens next."

Villager Constantin Toader, 41, said: "He looked like Superman and was flying slowly at about 100 yards from the ground in a standing position. He didn't make any smoke or sound. Just cruising around."
