Once upon a time there lived a family. The parents both worked long, hard hours to give their 3 children a reasonable standard of living; in 10 years they couldn’t afford a family holiday together, but the children wouldn’t go without; each year they would go to a holiday camp during the summer holidays for two weeks, and mum and dad would always ensure the kids had a new pair of shoes, a new winter coat or school uniform when needed.
But over a period of 18 months things took a turn for the worst; soaring mortgage costs and basic living costs meant that they finally had to allow their home to be repossessed. The parents, being survivors, relocated, started new jobs and lived quite happily in their modest rented accommodation.
For a few months the family benefited from lower housing costs; the grocery bill was seldom budgeted for, the kids still took their annual summer holiday trip, and there was even a little left over for a fortnightly takeaway for those emergency occasions when the parent’s boss would suddenly find a reason to give the mother unpaid extra work to do. It didn’t last however; food prices continued to rise, as did the cost of getting to work, and heating their small flat.
The mother began checking the grocery bill and was staggered to find that she was spending £150.00 a month more in food a month than she had the year before (despite one of the kids flying the nest to start university). The mother could only assume food prices had dramatically increased so she did the logical thing and budgeted carefully.
A short while after the 10 year old daughter asked her why they were suddenly eating a lot of foods that they didn’t normally eat, such as stews and casseroles, and not wanting to worry her daughter with complicated economics and world government policy changez she simply told her that mummy and daddy had decided that they wanted to eat healthier foods. This was, of course, a lie.
The mother managed to reduce the grocery bill slightly by buying cheap sausages for casseroles and pulses for stews, rather than cuts of lamb or beef, and adding a lot more vegetables. (This was, of course a disaster for the children, who hated veg’ with a passion.) Still, if they were hungry enough, they’d eat it, she mused.
Then she read an article in The Daily Mail: ‘The red meat diktat: Eat less of it to help planet, says minister (who just happens to be a vegetarian)’

Her stomach churned and her heart sank to an all time low; her food situation wasn’t going to get better. On the contrary, it was going to get worse.
She realized immediately that the article was a downright arrogant lie – the same sort of lie she’d told her own daughter to prevent her worrying about spiralling food costs.
On a combined income of £55,000 a year, she pondered, how will those on a smaller income cope…?
I couldn’t think of a happy ending for this ‘story’ – any suggestions most welcome.

In medieval Britain due to the strict religion of the time everybody from serf to king would not eat meat at least three times a week, wednesday, friday and saturday. Also throughout lent and advent, this equates to about half the year being meat free days. The rich usually feasted on fish on meat free days though.
