yeah dude , where the hell ya been ?
meees thinks you have life beyond forum .:D
anyway yes , we do need your input now and again dude .
you are right about walking long .
it is a good survivalist thing to practice .
like I say sometimes on walks
"NO -- lets not rest now , lets get the the check point 1st , then rest"
:D
walking long distances , especially with extra weight , is indeed a good skill .
this is a good thread wazaap .
You have reminded me how to increase my health , how silly of me not to do this simple thing .
not only is it a good idea for many reasons such as
knowing the area
gaining strategic advantages
gaining increased knowledge of wild life in that area
but it also gets one fit too .
well well well
after all the threads we have created , this one takes the longest yet is also one of the top important things we must be able to do .
which is why YOU thought of it and not ME .
only you can remember something as important yet seemingly unemportant as this .
your simply a brilliant dude .

I like to think im a young and energetic guy capable of walking long distances :)
but its a good thing to go out and do regularly, for the reasons listed in the last post :)
maybe this is a bit off topic, but how long do you think we have before the shtf, in your opinions.

I think its nearer than we dare to think .
probably about 3 years the most .
its might start with the wheather and natural catastrophies , in which then martial law is introduced .
if big brother doesnt use its own ficticouse lines to make a bad situation 1st , the natural cycles will .
however , I dont mean to bash folks or have some kind of higher than though position but listen to this .
Im 42 years old , and recovering from a stroke that still affects my health , yet when I intend reaching a target , i get there before I rest .
Now I can tell you this much , it isnt as easy as it sounds especially when carrying about 80bls of weight on your back .
wazaap can vouch for what i say .
being young isnt somuch important even though it helps
its visualisation , determination , stamina
that will seperate those who will make it
and those who "Think" they can make it .
walking long distances with out rest , is the ultimate aim when doing this , its harder than you think . coz once you rest , it makes it harder to get back up .
thats my view on it anyway .

i agree on this. once youve stopped youve had it. your muscles get cold and seize up and its game over. also like you say tracker an 80lb pack is heavy, so its a good idea to practice walking long distances with weight on your back:)

I love long distance walking.....
last year I walked Nottingham to Leicester in 1 day,
most of the lenght of Hadrians Wall in 5 days ( had to call off due to mate breaking arm/shoulder in 2 places).
Planning this year:
West Highland Way,
and
Liverpool/Leeds cannal.

On the subject of walking.
Has anyone seen the trailer for that new film coming out, with Viggo Mortensen in, its called The Road.
If you dont know what its about, Its set in a post-apocalyptic world. A father and son are travelling, on foot, to the south coast of America, all they have is a pistol and a shopping cart of scavenged food. Along the way they run into thieves and cannibals, etc. Check it out on imdb.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0898367/
The reason i bring it up is because i can imagine people acting like the way they do in this film, doing the dirty on others in times of need. Robbing and even killing people.
This is probably my greatest worry, people.

I hope that the only long distances that I will have to travel is from A-B when TSHTF first happens to get home from work.
I do understand the need to stay fit, but I do all my walking around here with only a light pack or even stuff just jammed into a bum-bag (fanny pack US).
The stuff I have at work (needs updating now, thanks for reminding me) is a small amount to see me over a few days. I live in town and I cant see things getting that bad that I cant beg, borrow or steal, water and wood to burn to get me home. That is assuming I am without transport. Even a fold-up bike is better in the first instances. Once home, I/we will either bug-out or stay put.
After that, I cant see me traveling too far with a heavy pack for anything!
Still. It is good to go on extended treks with the family, to see their weak points and to hone-in on ones skills on a day to day basis.
Nelly.

YEP !
wazaap and my self have been saying this all along which is why it is important to read the survival threads .
In times need , the needs outweigh the actions that some take to justify the ends to that mean .
this is truth !
it is human nature !
we must face this fact !
by the way , I intend to watch that film .

Yeah definetly, human nature.
So in saying that, it would be wise to get a weapon?
My father collects knives, of all sorts. I would probably grab some of them.

A trip in any country even today, would require you to 'tool'-up when moving around the less 'policed' areas.
In the uk, I would favour a walking-stick to get home in the first instance as it would be fine if viewed in a curfew by a rozzer, but after things had settled, I would opt for a fire-arm and traveling in pairs.

sorry just got back from a 3mile walk in the snow - good for the muscles! anyway i just thought there are lots of ppl out there who are summer walkers only - GET OUT IN THE WINTER! it is loads of fun especially in the snow!.
anyway back to a question about the SHTF!
Im a straight up guy and done believe in hokus pokus stuff.
my reckoning is that the only thing that is hitting the fan in the UK is the climate! - i dont believe in climate change per-say but i do believe that the climate constantly changes- the facts point to the next ice age is away to happen.
now that either means a pole shit could be on the way or it is the calm b4 the storm and the sun is ready to go a bit nuts on us!
so it could really hot-up! - if either of these happen then the SWHTF! - and on a massive scale!.
but on a basic level - when you get a survival head on there is no stopping you - you see the world different to others and it gives you the edge!.
anyway hope this helps.

annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd hes BACK !:D
hiya dude .
your right about the winter walking too .
It can be harder walking in the cold because some peoples lungs get so used to the warm that cold walks for long periods can make their lungs cough etc in the bitter cold , and since the cold actually boosts the immune system , it is wizer to learn to walk long distances in the clod as it regulates your heat much better anyway .
the pole shift thing ?
I have made a thread on it and yes I know youve seen it but look at it now .
there is a good part in there from national geographic scientists etc .
good to see ya back dude .

I'm fortunate enough to work as a dog walker so I get plenty of walking practise as well as getting the opportunity to suss out what my local landscape has to offer. I know of a couple of springs that are off the beaten track and I'm familiar with the local wild-life, I don't eat meat but I would nick the odd duck egg if I had too :o

Excellent point to raise. Being properly shod is an absolute must and a good pair of waterproof walking boots will be worth their weight in gold if you have to travel across country :)
