NIB has told customers that its branches will no longer handle cash withdrawals or lodgements, nightsafe lodgements or foreign exchange cash.
They are instead urging customers to use ATMs or get cash back on their laser cards if they need notes. Branches will continue to accept cheques and postal orders.
The bank says the idea of "cashless banking" will be rolled out over the next 18 months, and that the model is that used by its Danish parent company.

The same bank that only two weeks ago cut almost 25% of its staff and is closing almost half its branches.. this in spite of reduced costs already this year.. ..
A cashless bank.. cashless society.. ..I smell biometrics.. ..;)

Paying for goods with notes and coins could be consigned to history within five years, according to the chief executive of Visa Europe.
Peter Ayliffe said that, by 2012, using credit and debit cards should be cheaper and more convenient than cash.

well they are getting rid of the penny in uk
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/6589171.stm
its only a matter of time before they bring the new money in. someone said that it would cause uproar if they got rid of money and tried to get in a cashless society. but i said well they already got the euro in and if they accept that they will accept anything.
and the fact they are banning the use of cheques which they have done for some time where we live.
welcome to the cashless society in 5 years.

that will be the nail in the coffin for them .. its too soon Irish people like to have cash in hand .. it was hard for the banks to get the people to save with them in the first place, a lot of the older generations were more of a keep in under the bed types.

Just a quick optimistic thought; wouldn't a cashless society bring about an underground 'black economy' that uses cash?

The definition of an underground black economy could easily be changed to include you buying a loaf of bread without a chip.

welcome to the old/new ganglands. move over alcapone here come the chavs.:)
this is why these gangsters got a hold in england and america because of the black economy. this inevitably led to violence and the fittest became the drug lords/elite business class today.
its all a matter of cycles in history. its all been done before. one thing though is that there were those robin hood types.
survival of the fittest. one way to get rid of half the population. starvation.there are many out there who wont except the chip because of the crap in revelations.
personally i would have a chip but not implanted. they can stick that idea.

NIB is a bank which has always been closely connected to corrupt Irish politicians. They have been implicated in endless scandals and yet they are still in business!
NIB says Irish dependence on cash is amongst the highest in Europe.
Don't you just love the NLP in this. As if the Irish are somehow defective or an embrassement because we prefer tangible money in our pockets.

Because Irish white collar criminals and bent politicians get something called "triburnials" - the rest of us get jail for doing far less.
