Just came across this article:

Now Microsoft can update your Windows WITHOUT even warning you or asking you. They won't even tell you what they "updated". This is absolutely ridiculous and another example of the totalitarian tiptoe.

A few months ago I was using Linux for about 5 month......I bought a new PC that had Windows that I am using now, simply because it works as it is and can't be arsed installing and configuring Linux again....but I think I might....this is pissing me off....

What gets me is that they only got caught doing this, how long has this been going on?How long would it have went on before they got caught without them admitting it?

"Microsoft representatives sought to explain and defend the practice, describing it as a unique situation."

I wonder who else uses this secret back door?

Pure invasion of privacy here!

What a load of shit!!

Yes, how long have they been doing this? And to what end? Why would they feel that they shouldn't show us?? Maybe this is why we get viruses?? They put them in there then come along with new ideas to reduce our internet freedom for safety....problem-reaction-solution in the virtual world.......:(

Speaking of virili,Im of the thinking that some of these are just created by the so-called virus companies to install some sort of fear into manipulating the consumer to buy more of their product.

I discovered that M$ was doing silent updates last April when DST changed. I had couple of the servers that i disabled time service on, because there was a discrepancy with windows time service that went to time.windows.com and synched up the server clock to wrong time.
That very same day M$ has disabled their time servers because all hell broke loose. so, i manually got servers to correct time and all was good.

the way i discovered this "silent update" was 1 day after time.windows.com went down. Because we had another time server that was setup on the domain and that was pointing to an outside time server -- we had some strange issue.
windows time service would take over and change the time
according to registry settings (that did not take place after time service patch was applied)

what was happening is that time.windows.com was pulling the wrong time because DST patch that M$ released did not always work. so time.windows.com would take over another more authoritative time server on network that directly synched up with stratum 1 time servers on internet.

so, i disabled the windows time service on 2 AD controllers. a day later the whole hell broke loose by time "jumping down"
on some servers and clients and staying at previous time on others. I discovered not only that DST patch worked about 50 % of time, but i discovered that windows time service went from disabled to enabled!

the only way this could have happened is if someone upgraded the components silently or someone in my department has done this. but they have not as I also verified in security logs.

Keep in mind that both DCs are behind a firewall and not accessible from outside, so the only way that those DCs can be upgraded is if something on each DC triggered update feature that enabled time service and have started it.

And, we know that windows "phones home" occasionally, so this could have been that hidden trigger that opened up the windows built in backdoor.

and, the most disturbing part is that I ALWAYS disable auto updates so server or pc should be unable to initiate any update period and only way it could be done normally is by doing it manually.

this indicate that Microsoft has a back door that they can use to upgrade any component the choose and that there is a "pulse" sent to M$ that can then open up the backdoor. how it works exactly is still puzzling to me, but i have experienced this and i have shown this to people in my department.
we are scratching our heads with this one because M$ OSs are proprietary code, so we can't just go and see how things work at OS level.

and as the above-referenced article said -- they discovered that windows update component was replaced silently.
it is a pure B.S. that "new service patches would not work" if auto update service was not upgraded, because with previous major components updates they asked you do you want a new "windows installer" to be downloaded and installed.

this is just a plot to take complete control the M$ OSs, and this is a stepping stone in conditioning that silent updates of brain chips that are coming are a normal thing.

we definitely know that Gates is one of them, so why are we surprised?

Yep, especially after Vista, Microsoft seems to enjoy installing all kinds of updates. They now do it silently probably because it makes it "safer" for everyone. If just one computer is open to a virus, it might become another hub for that virus to spread from.

Also they are used in bot/zombie networks for hackers to use.

I am a geek, so I simply got me two computers. One for banking and stuff like that, and one for gaming :) That way I can have the one with most security risk on it turned off most the time.

I have refused to fucking update with Service Pack 2.

Now it was all pointless for me to do that with every boot-up?

Linux looks good! I didn't know an alternative to windows existed (but then again, I couldn't give a fuck), is it easy to install, does it have to be on a late computer?

Use to virtualize Windows on your linux box these free products:

Xen

I'd love to get away from Microsoft.
And those shots of Linux do look rather seksy.
I admit though the thought of changing OS
Is a bit scary to someone like me who only has
Small knowledge about computers.
And if it all goes wrong...
Think I'll get my bf to install Linux and keep Windows
So I can dual boot and see how it goes.
:D

I can't do that. The program I'm writing makes extensive use of the windows API. This is the problem, if you write code that has a chance of running reasonably fast you need to use low-level access to the operating system, and so to port to Linux would be just too much bother. However the code I write tries to steer clear of any higher-level functions. I mean their stealth software is not going to make much of info like a rectangle was drawn at the point (X,Y) and coloured 1982822883.

In fairness soglad, it does say in the license agreement that if you have xp or vista installed, with a net connection, that they can make changes to your OS at any time, without your knowledge.

It is hidden away amongst loads of legal blurb, and it is shit, but not really that secret or shocking.

My advice is switch to Ubuntu. It's quite easy to set up, very secure, and way better performance-wise, speed, stability etc..

Otherwise use Windows 98 SE - they can't update that automatically. It's not much different from XP anyway.

They don't have the RIGHT to do this!
If true, they can and will be sued.

In the meantime, get a program like winpatrol, which will detect and undo unauthorized changes to your system.

I used Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Suse and other distros for months, but for ease I just put XP on a new pc I've got, and am happy with it. I had lots of trouble trying to get Linux just doing simple things (I know how to run it, I just got error after error), and find it's not as reliable as lots of people boast. It's brilliant for people who just surf the web, write, watch things and listen to music, but for anything else, in my opinion (an experienced one) it's shite for anything else, and a big hassle.

I know I'm sucking the corperate dick here, but XP just WORKS and I haven't got the time and effort to mess around with Linux anymore.

Yeah, that's actually a pretty good Windows distro. Vista is THE joke of jokes. Not only is it a complete invasion of privacy (again, it's in the licience agreement, so you sign away your own rights I suppose), it's a piece of shit, riddled with spyware. Plus, you need a pretty good PC for it.......couldn't be arsed!

Hmmm, plane should be boarding soon......c'mon....I need to get to bed!

guys im running ubuntu 7.04 and up until about 2 months ago i knew nothing of linux, after much frustration at a vicious virus i got on my XP maching that was impossible to remove with my understanding i installed ubuntu dapper drake (the 64 bit version cos my pc supports it) i read thru lots of how tos and installing programs was a ball ache and even more so trying to find software for my speedtouch USB ADSL modem, so i fucked that off and got ubuntu fiesty fawn (7.04) and its sweet as a nut, i found the program for my modem and installed all the non free flash players etc and its soo much better than windows and loads faster!

So if your a windows user and thinking of switching id advice you to;

1- read about linux and check your hardware is compatable.
2- read the wikis and how to's for software you will be wanting to install
3- Stay away from 64 bit versions as there all wank atm and not faster, maybe in a few yrs they'll be properly developed and catered for. Get the distro of choice and after its downloads DO and MD5 chksum (verify the integrity of the file(s))
4- Make sure you write the ISO image properly there are various places that tell you how its done (its not hard promise!)
5- get it installed but remember to back up your data if you want to keep your music etc as with any new Os it will want to format your hard drive to do a fresh install, and remember that windows uses NTFS and linux uses FAT32 file systems.
6- have a wander round microsoft help forums and laugh!!! because your a linux geek!! :D and it works
7- get the non free software installed (by non free i mean its got some rights and restrictions but you dnt have to pay!) so you can watch the icke vidcasts.
8- have a look at wine (for running windows programs on linux) and samba (networking with windows PC's you need this if you have a home network with other windows PC's its not too difficult to set up)

To stop Microsoft from accessing your computer..

Goto, start - run - services.msc

Set 'Automatic Updates' AND 'Background Intellegent Transfer Service' startup type to DISABLED and restart computer.

That will stop Windows update from working properly, so make sure you start both of them up if you want an update.
