PM designate Zubkov says may run for president
13/ 09/ 2007
MOSCOW, September 13 (RIA Novosti) - Viktor Zubkov, named by President Vladimir Putin as prime minister following the dismissal of Mikhail Fradkov's Cabinet, said he could run for the presidency next year.
Zubkov also said he believes personnel and structural changes in the Cabinet are likely.
"The government structure is not very effective, so changes are imminent," he said, adding that recent administrative reforms have produced little result.
Acting Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov said Wednesday he has no doubts parliament will approve the head of the country's financial regulator as the new premier. He also said he was sure the new government will continue the course led by the dismissed government.

Putin's PM choice eyes presidency
Viktor Zubkov worked with Mr Putin in St Petersburg in the 1990s
Russia's Prime Minister-designate, Viktor Zubkov, has not ruled out running for the presidency next March to succeed Vladimir Putin.
Asked if he would seek to be president, Mr Zubkov said: "If I achieve something in the post of prime minister, I do not rule out that possibility."

Viktor Zubkov becomes Russia's new prime minister
14/ 09/ 2007

MOSCOW, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - President Vladimir Putin signed a decree Friday appointing Viktor Zubkov prime minister after the lower house of parliament voted overwhelmingly to back his candidacy, the Kremlin press office said.
Zubkov, 65, chief fiscal monitor for the last six years, was nominated for the job on Wednesday when Putin dismissed the government and prime minister, three months before parliamentary elections. Soon after his nomination, Zubkov announced his intention to run for the presidency in March 2008, when Putin's term is set to expire.
Speaking in the Black Sea resort of Sochi on Friday, Putin confirmed that the new premier could run for the presidency, but said there were at least four other strong candidates, and that the campaign would not be a foregone conclusion.
The president's nomination of the relatively-unknown candidate came as a surprise, following widely-circulated rumors that Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, Putin's close ally seen as his likely successor, would assume the post.
Zubkov, Putin's deputy in the St. Petersburg mayor's office in the 1990s, has also maintained close personal ties with the president.

Does anyone else feel that there is a concerted effort in the west to make russia into the villian. I mean is it just me or is this fast becoming a bad 1970's Roger Moore bond film.
For example, Andrei Lugovoi (the major suspect in the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko) has just announced he will seek election to the russian parliament. Its almost pantomime. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/6997547.stm

Not sure, but it's likely Daniel Craig's next outing will involve Russia for sure.
