I Had a Dream - lyrics/poetry

I had a dream like so many others
faded by the years, faded in my mind
I had a dream of stars and suns
I had a dream that the war was won
I had a nightmare that kept me awake
I tried to leave, but I had to stay in this place
everything I had, I lost
every love I made, a cost
but the truth is so simple
so complex
what you have
is what you'll never get

I've known so many friends
and they crept right back out of my life
I've committed so many sins
and they've brought the devil up to my side
he whispered a secret to me
it made me laugh and it made me weep
this thing I know so well
earth is a child
the child of heaven and hell

I woke up from a dream at night
I saw the moon and the twilight
I went right back into sleep
sometimes I guess I'd rather dream

I try to sleep now
it never does come
I wish I'd listened
I wish I'd had some fun
I wish I knew that the devil was me
I wish I saw with the same clarity
now it's over
and I can't dream
but I can hope for
a good night's sleep
