Symphony of Science - 'Our Place in the Cosmos' (ft. Sagan, Dawkins, Kaku, Jastrow) - YouTube
This is a song called "Our Place in the Cosmos" by Carl Sagan, Richard Dawkins, Michio Kaku, and Robert Jastrow. This video really shows Dawkins in a different light and that he can be a positive, nice guy. Sagan and Kaku are also two of my favorite scientists.
Enjoy! :)
Lyrics:
[Narrator]
With every century
Our eyes on the universe have been opened anew
We are witness
To the very brink of time and space
[Robert Jastrow]
We must ask ourselves
We who are so proud of our accomplishments
What is our place in the cosmic perspective of life?
[Carl Sagan]
The exploration of the cosmos
Is a voyage of self discovery
As long as there have been humans
We have searched for our place in the cosmos
[Richard Dawkins]
Are there things about the universe
That will be forever beyond our grasp?
Are there things about the universe that are
Ungraspable?
[Sagan]
One of the great revelations of space exploration
Is the image of the earth, finite and lonely
Bearing the entire human species
Through the oceans of space and time
[Dawkins]
Matter flows from place to place
And momentarily comes together to be you
Some people find that thought disturbing
I find the reality thrilling
[Sagan]
As the ancient mythmakers knew
We're children equally of the earth and the sky
In our tenure on this planet, we've accumulated
Dangerous evolutionary baggage
We've also acquired compassion for others,
Love for our children,
And a great soaring passionate intelligence
The clear tools for our continued survival
[Michio Kaku]
We could be in the middle
Of an inter-galactic conversation
And we wouldn't even know
[Sagan]
We've begun at last
To wonder about our origins
Star stuff contemplating the stars
Tracing that long path
Our obligation to survive and flourish
Is owed not just to ourselves
But also to that cosmos
Ancient and vast, from which we spring

I don't actually get why so many people on here see Dawkins as a baddie in the first place.
OK, I can appreciate that his debating style can put people's backs up, but he's coming from a viewpoint that society should be secular and religion/spirituality is a private thing.
I agree with that viewpoint and usually he goes head-on with religious types who impose their view on everyone else. He does go too far when he is rude to people who aren't trying to impose anything on others though.

I actually like his pompous and stern style. He gets straight to the point, no sugar coating, and that's what I like about him.

The symphony of sceience is the symphony of God
According to Stephen Hawking "if the density of the universe one second after big bang had been greater than 1 part in a thousand billion, the universe would have collapsed after 10 years. On the other hand,if the density of the universe at the same time had been less by the same amount the universe would be empty"
To give meaning to this,if you were firing a bullet at a 1 inch target 20 billion light years away the hit wouyld have to be spot on.
God does not play dice........Albert Einstien wasn,t it.

Because Dawkins is just another religious fundamentalist

There was no big bang, and the matrix does play dice.

So Hawkin, who does nothing but calculations has got it all wrong and you know better......LOL

I guess it's hard to think of time before the Universe. I think it's likely that there was multiple big bangs and finally the one that worked which produced this Universe. I think it's also possible with the many worlds theory that this Universe is just one of the many universes that managed to work. Quantum physics hints at multiple universes.

Well, there was no before big bang,as far as we know there was no matter as we know it.Time is measured by the movement of the planet around the Sun.
So really the materal universe has always been here if you use time to measure its age.
Multiple big bangs...mmmmmm,Ive been thinking about that recently too.
Ofcourse anything is possible, but what this suggests is either that something was trying to kick start a stubborn universe,or the original formular had to be tinkered with or there was an infinite amount of different big bangs and one of them hit the jackpot.
Science has a long way to go before getting any where near the answers we want, you know that Quantum theory and gravitational theory dont talk to eachother, both theories seem to work but not when put together.
We are waiting for our next Newton or Einstein to solve the problem,so considering we get one every 300 years or so,it could be some time off.

Where have you been? Ever heard of string theory? It unites relativity and quantum mechanics. That is the only candidate for a Unified Field Theory and is well on it's way to being proven.
Also, your prediction of revolutionary scientists every 300 years is completely off. Scientific and technological advancement progresses exponentially.

Who mentioned relativity dude ????
You should read posts more carefully before responding, this will also aid your better comprehension regards cosmology, physics and the nature of the universe.
scentific understanding progresses constantly, but that there are large gaps between genious is a fact.
Now,considering that I have a large collection of lectures on DVD and take great interest in this subject I know what i post comes from highly educated men....therefore I know that you are just an ego trying to proove how far ahead you are of the "God man"
Forget it man,it cuts no ice with me,I have no doubt at all that you have not studied this field as closely as I.

It appears that you have no idea that relativity has to do with gravity.
General relativity is defined as the geometric theory of gravitation. Wasn't it you who brought up gravitational theory? Yeah, thought so.

Wow, great rebuttal. "I know way more about this than you." Ok, then how about you actually address what I said if you have any clue about this subject matter. You apparently were unaware that string theory unites gravity and quantum theory.

I have absolutley no intention of entertaining your ego.
How old are you ?
Are you so nieve as to not realise that on internet discussion forums you can access any desired info via google at the cilck of a button therefore making any competition of knowledge redundant.
I will only post what I understand and believe to hold water,on the other hand you seem quite willing to venture into areas even the most advanced minds struggle to make sense of in order to demonstrate how superior you mind is.
cuts no ice with me.

Because Dawkins is just another religious fundamentalist
He's also a eugenicist. No doubt he was chosen for his role by the Royal Society.
