Hey everybody. I've been reading all the things about how bad animal products are for you, and I've been thinking, although I LOOOOVE cheese, I want to switch to a vegan diet.
There's only one small problem..
I can't stand the taste of many veggies! I like corn, spinige and such. But the rest. YUCK!!
Any advice people would like to share?

When _underscore_ met his wife, she wasn't really interested in vegetables at all, just meat and potatoes. _underscore_ on the other hand is a vegetable eatin' fool (with a few, far between exceptions, like beets). Anyway, _underscore_ always uses lots of vegetables in the meals he prepares, and _underscore_s wife has, after four years, really warmed up to eating veggies. (Especially when _underscore_s wife was pregnant, _underscore_ forced her to eat veggies, as if she were a child at the dinner table.) Anyway, just start making yourself eat a variety of veggies prepared in a variety of ways, you'll start to appreciate them.

Milk contains something called casomorphin which is a morphine like substance which occurs naturally in the milk. It's there to encourage the calf to keep coming back for more. In cheese it gets heavily concentrated which is why cheese is very addictive.
I went vegan last November having been a vegetarian for more than ten years. My major concern was my addiction to cheese and my love of pizza. Once I gave it up I never really desired it though. It's an easy addiction to beat IMHO. Sugar and caffeine are a lot harder.
You're going to have to learn to love vegetables. Not sure how to do that. I friend of mine used to live of frozen/tinned shite and hated vegetables too. He went vegetarian (I guess about seven years ago) and he's been fine. I think you just have to take the plunge.

Make nut cheeses. If you're going vegan, but not all raw, you can still warm up some veggies that would normally taste bland and create wonderful dishes. Find a vegan cook (or uncook) book.
http://www.whfoods.com/index.html This site is pretty good, just ignore the animal products.

Glad you mentioned this! I personally don't think this makes cheese or milk "bad" and we do have receptors for these substances for a reason. With this noted though, you can appreciate your bodies battles to give up dairy more appropriately. Remember, you're used to happy chemicals, not necessarily the cheese itself, which you can give up. Cacao contains addictive substances as well.
Good luck! :)

It's never been easier to go vegan. There''s tons of vegan websites/forums/blogs/etc. You can get so much good advice, so many good recipes, so many friendly people will help you out....you should give it a go. Aim for doing six weeks and then see how it goes.

Oh yeah (duh!)... check out youtube and other video sites! Plenty of people offer help and show you how to make raw and vegan dishes... I try to include many raw vegan foods and meals.
These girls (http://www.sexybitcheslikeitraw.com/) have wonderful videos on making raw nut milk and even raw cheesecake, without the dairy.

I am quite the same as you but I am a vegan but mostly a fruitarian. Fruit tastes better and I consider it better for humans (other apes seem to think so also).
Although I would stay away from a lot of citrus, I have some for a treat every now and again but they are a bit too acidic. I eat wild apples, pears, greengages, blackberries and plumbs, I also buy honey due mellons (so good when ripe) also I'm gonna start eating more bananas. I eat pinapples, oranges and lemons occasionally but not too often.

Citrus fruits aren't acidic, they are alkaline forming when they're metabolised.

Very very true but my mouth knows they are acidic and my teeth do also!

I brush with toothpaste that has no fluoride in it.
And it sounds nice and all, but I have to think about my built aswell.
I'm 6 foot, and my shoulders across are probably a good 55cm across, you know.
I'm over weight, and I'm going to the gym now aswell. Atleast 5 nights a week. Only for cardio though.
So, what would be a good diet?
BTW, I'm drinking around 1 liter of water a day or more..

You can’t just think your eating healthy, you need to do your research…
Here is some basic info. This is mostly about cardio patients but don’t let that confuse you.
http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=-5215695644951404318&q=heart+attack+proof&total=89&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0
Look into fruitarians but I would escape any labels, I eat mostly fruit but I don’t give a shit if I eat a burger every now and again. A lot of vegans I know are only vegan when it comes to social outings and eat meat and dairy when they are on their own :) Just take it easy and be true to yourself.
Craigs website is one of the best resources for diet info…

There is so much disinfo out there put out by the meat and dairy industry...
Some things like protein is superior in meat. Wrong! Amino acids are amino acids and are not even greatly important for you (half of them are created from carbs). The essential amino acids are fine to be taken in moderation. Your body is very effecient. Just think a bodybuilder on roids at maximum would put on 1lbs of muscle a week (and that's extremely maximum of muscle fibre). What does he eat? 8oz stakes, eggs, protein shakes and everything, that's like saying your body is 0.001% effecient. Stoopid.
Another half truth they put out is that you don't get vitamin b12, which is true but what they don't tell you is that b12 is created by the friendly bacteria in your gut so you just need to make sure you have friendly bacteria and you'll be fine (kombucha is the best source).

Well I'm on the sixth day of a water fast right now so I am feeling quite depressed:)
When you start out eating well you will probably feel worse, this is called a herxhimer effect or detox reaction. It's the same as going cold turkey, your body is releived to be free of toxic food but rather than celebrate, it goes straight to work clearing out the junk.
Once you get past that phase you feel extremely powerful and alert. Yes your eye's get much brighter and your tongue clears up. Everything gets better, warts fall off, hair grows back and many unexpected things that you didn't consider much of a burden are healed and of course, you will goto a healthy weight.

Thats awesome chris(not the depression bit) that you are going on a detox.. I highly recommend everyone trying a detox of some form or another and just see how you feel.. Try not drinking alcohol for a week , or stop eating red meat for a while... I felt all kinds of wierd when I was going through my vegie transition, but now find that i can control my appetite better and even get turned off by the smell of cooking meat now whereas i used to drool over it.. ;)

by the way studies show that you can get to like food you don't like (be it broccoli or whatever) by trying it a few times, maybe six or seven
I know this from experience because i used to hate tomatoes and then I just decided I was going to like them and soon enough it worked!
(I made this decision because I learned that tomatoes are the best salad type food for you nutrition wise)

As a HMHT I know how important meat is, no pun intended. Eating meat is second only to killing it in the first place for the enjoyment factor. I often go out steak hunting, crawling through the grass. Sure, I get covered in slugs and tics but I can handle it.
I gave up trying to find steaks since they live up trees, so instead I just started shooting squirrels. I didn't much like the taste of squirrels, so now I just shoot them for fun. I found one big squirrel, it was huge. I measured it with the help of my friend Brick Murphy. It was 33 inches and around 30 lbs. We decided to measure me to see if I had grown but Brick didn't use the tape measure right and it said I was 5 foot 2 and half. It made me feel really bad and suicidal. I promised war on the squirrels and have so far successfully killed over 4,000 of them. I have captured many of their leaders who I am keeping as POWs, they have to perform circus tricks for me.
Using remote helicoptors bought from Argos I am able napalm the grey fuckers and follow up with a make shift flame thrower using a lynx can and a lighter. The rabbits who are the neutral forrest race in this ongoing war have recently expressed interest in helping me rid the forrests of such vermin. We have a few language problems but my pet rabbit, Tinkerbell, is the translator. They want protection from rats and in return will take over the night shifts to ensure victory against the Squirrels.

When I went vegan in November last year I also gave up all additives/junk food/processed food/sugar/etc and started eating lots more organic food and basically cooking everything I ate (unless it was raw of course lol). I was inspired by Dr Lorraine Day's DVD 'Diseases Don't Just Happen' and I thought I'd change my diet for six weeks to see if I noticed any difference. I had no plans at all to go permanantly vegan. What I noticed very quickly was not only did I feel better (healthier, more alive) but I could think more clearly and my vocabulary actually improved too (words that I knew already but rarely used were popping into my head).
As Chris says you will detox. I had a nasty cold right at the start of it all but I knew that was a good sign and just kept going. I decided very quickly that my six week trial should be permanent and so it has been. It's not always easy when you're out and about to dodge sugar/additives/animal products but it is do-able and the less of this shite we all eat the less there will be to buy.
There's been a couple of times since I changed my diet when I've eaten something with MSG in it. First time unknowingly (until I checked) and more recently I was using up some miso that had E621 (msg) in it. Both times my head has gone numb and I've gotten a headache (I never get headaches anymore). I never used to notice that effect when I ate this stuff more regularly which makes me wonder if my head was permanently numbed by the toxins I was consuming.

Wow that's amazing! How do you find any food that is additive free?
I guess the only way it is to make it from scratch? Using fresh veggies
and fruit.
I am going to try cut down on meat for starters and build myself up or
is it down?

Yeah you have to make it all yourself. Lots of fresh (preferably organic) vegetables and fruit, brown rice, pasta, cous cous (I'm hooked on cous cous at the minute :) ), nuts, grains, etc. It might sound boring but I have never enjoyed food as much as I do right now. I was a pretty healthy eater before I changed my diet but I'd still buy a lot of premade food at the supermarket. Truth is that stuff is really bland generally relying on lots of sugar, salt, additives and fat to make it palatable. Making food yourself means you're relying on good quality vegetables, spices, herbs, etc to make food taste good and it makes a huge difference. Plus there's something about making everything yourself that just feels right.
