The End Of The Internet Beginning in the UK

Fresh source, from 21 Nov:

A source close to the British Labour Government has just given me reliable information about the most radical copyright proposal I've ever seen.
Secretary of State Peter Mandelson is planning to introduce changes to the Digital Economy Bill now under debate in Parliament. These changes will give the Secretary of State (Mandelson -- or his successor in the next government) the power to make "secondary legislation" (legislation that is passed without debate) to amend the provisions of Copyright, Designs and Patents Act (1988).

What that means is that an unelected official would have the power to do anything without Parliamentary oversight or debate, provided it was done in the name of protecting copyright. Mandelson elaborates on this, giving three reasons for his proposal:

1. The Secretary of State would get the power to create new remedies for online infringements (for example, he could create jail terms for file-sharing, or create a "three-strikes" plan that costs entire families their internet access if any member stands accused of infringement)

2. The Secretary of State would get the power to create procedures to "confer rights" for the purposes of protecting rightsholders from online infringement. (for example, record labels and movie studios can be given investigative and enforcement powers that allow them to compel ISPs, libraries, companies and schools to turn over personal information about Internet users, and to order those companies to disconnect users, remove websites, block URLs, etc)

3. The Secretary of State would get the power to "impose such duties, powers or functions on any person as may be specified in connection with facilitating online infringement" (for example, ISPs could be forced to spy on their users, or to have copyright lawyers examine every piece of user-generated content before it goes live; also, copyright "militias" can be formed with the power to police copyright on the web)

We never had real freedom, or rather a good standard of, and the internet has helped us wake up to this. We are reaching a tipping point and they are hastily erecting the barricades. The internet is the door to freedom. Maybe i'm being a little pedantic, that's the way I see it though. The internet is certainly key whichever way round you look at it.

It is also a prison. If it was taken away we might actually get up from our keyboards and do something

I hope Mandelson succeeds. Let the corporations hoard their music. Its only shit mainstream bands that care about copyright. If they don't realise that file sharing INCREASES demand for their music then fuck em. People will just go and download more interesting music by people who aren't corporate whores. I predict that without filesharing Lily Allen's career will be over in two albums time and she will be resorting to comeback slots on the X-Factor followed by oblivion. Ditto the rest of em.

*to Kitler*

yeah, i guess those were my thoughts as well, only put in better wordings.

just think of all these things people have feared throughout history,
like industry, the automobile, airplanes, the internet etc.
well, they also have an (almost) essential part to play in the free flow of info,
the quicker unification of those who still believe truth to bring freedom...

...and i guess the smaller details, like closing down certain 'commodities',
has its purpose too, and we should not get all anxious and upset about it,
don't you think? :)

The safer the internet becomes, the better it will be. We can then develop it alot more and introduce new technologies and such. Trust me it wont die, it will just grow into something more interesting.

"will the internet die?" My Magic eight ball Says?

Absolutely!

Which means something is going to take its place, something even better.

Hey, you have a good point there. It would definitely prove how serious we are, and it would show we are right and people would start to speak more in person. The internet has given us every chance we ever needed to learn about the world, and though I hope it doesn't go down, we need to be ready to march if it does.
